US rear lights

Does anyone know the legality of using US style rear lights and have the red section flashing? Are there clauses in the mot that allow certain cars to pass without changing lights?

Usual question provokes the usual answer - what do UK imported Mustang and 'vette owners do ?

wrong answer...... what will the motorcycle rider say to the policeman when he has worn out his leathers saying the car changed lane without indicating

That's my point Sean and why I asked for opinions. They can get away with it so can I?. I'm not overly concerned about me driving the car as if the unthinkable happen and I end up in court I'd just employ a barrister and expert to prove that a flashing faded red light on one side is sufficient indication that I may be turning right and the average human brain would work this out. I more concerned about if I sell the car with a valid mot and someone points out that section 7 subsection 3 paragraph 12.3 say Ian Datsun 240z must have amber indicators because its not on the list of exceptions.

Do all your cars have the uk required front indicators mounted on the tops of the bumpers and approved upward faceing number plate lights then Terry?

These changes had to be made to uk cars or they couldn't be used on uk roads.

I must add, I'm not arguing for or against anything, just interested in people's views so I can make an informed choice as to what to do.

All comments welcome.

I looked at that yesterday Steve. Good info and probably the way to go but I would like to keep the flashing reds if it was allowed, not just if I could get away with it. I do have a couple of spare uk rear lights but would like to keep a US car looking like a US car.

Is this what you do with yours?

Put your indicator bulbs in the reverse light parts. you don't have to have reverse lights for an mot, if you've got them they have to work. Or just fit duel colour lamps in and have both.

Yes, have had them MOT'd with the flashing reds . Have always fitted UK spec lights or changed as Adam has on the link when selling.

He won't - dead men tell no tales.:D

You're only saying this whilst comparing to Euro specc-ed Zs - I don't think I've ever seen a US manufactured car with orange lenses !

and this Aussie Healey looks like it has all red lights :

Very good John I never knew the 350mm height rule for indicators  although the number light rule is no longer current check your local transit rear door

moving on to the front indicators /side lamps some wiring is needed here as the u/s spec front indicators double up as amber side lights using as we know a stop and tail bulb and the headlamps will probably have no pilot side lamp in besides there going to be l/H drive items,

I do like your idea of a faded orangy rear lamp/indicator though

Were old 'vettes ever sold here with orange indicators? If not that may be our problem Zs were and so the assumption is that lights are easily changed.

Put a USA sticker on it John to warn following motorists (helps with awareness of LHD too).

Terry I understand your point fully re motorcyclist but perhaps the law enforcers ought to consider the issue in the context of a 'risk assessment' i.e. how many are on the road, how often are they driven and how likely is a collision as a consequence. The greater risk is cars with 'blown' bulbs, drivers not even using their indicators etc etc.

Of course I realise too that a law is a law.

Yes rob the law is the law, I on occasions do work for major international giant where the signs are in 7 different languages and the kerbs are painted yellow, now everything is fine until it goes wrong, that's when it all crawls out of the woodwork like when accident investigators find all the pieces of headlamp glass and stick them together to see if it was correct and aimed in the right place  its an easy nick with results unlike a blown bulb, any how I shall probably leave my us cars wiring as it is with just the addition of white side lights in the headlamps and remove the side light from the indicator cluster

Good discussions and I've made my decision. Keep the US rear lights and put the indicator where the reverse lights are. Change the front headlight unit for ones with side lights. Change the front markers to indicators along with the under bumper ones. Put additional indicators above the bumpers so I don't end up being prosecuted as Terry has said.
