Up and running.

really nice looking motor, rob.i'll have to keep an eye out for it.makes me want to start doing mine ,but "she who must be obeyed" says the house extension comes first.

Spacers - right realise now that it's for looks.

You must fill the arches you didn't need ;)

Car looks good

The spacers serve two purposes Rob, Firstly they fill the arches I didn't need lol but wanted because I like the look of them and had wanted them on my car after seeing a set on a 1969 GTR many years ago. And secondly the wheels I have wont clear the brakes with out some sort of spacer fitted, Once I get new wheel I wont have them sticking out quite so far because they do catch the inner lip of the arch at the moment, By the way I don''t like having spacers fitted I would prefer the correct wheel but can't afford a new set just yet so needs must.

Cheers John I'll try and bring it up to show sometime soon before the weather turns nasty ;).

My main job now is to get the drivers door sorted so it works properly, Carpets and all that pretty shit can wait .

Rob

The local MOT garage said I needed a drivers door or wing mounted mirror to pass the test.

Rob
Can understand about needing the drivers door but dont understand him giving you a choice between a door or a mirror to get a MOT
seems dodgy to me:lol:

LoL I didn't think anybody else was as strange as the garlic muncher but you're running him a close second Steve :lol:.

I've got a proper door mounted mirror to fit I just don't want to drill holes in my new skins :(.

Well guys I'm more and more in love everyday with my Z lol, It's just fantastic on the A & B roads around Aberdeenshire, It handles like it's on rails and quite comfy as well.

I've had a few teething problems over the last few days with carb issues but I fixed them all today, That;s another thing I love about this car. It breaks down and you can fix it yourself in less than an hour with out having to pay some robbing spanner money all your hard earned cash .

I had noticed that not only was it a bit sluggish at higher speeds it also stank of fuel, After speaking to Mike my suspicions were proven right, One of the carb was blowing fuel out of the float bowl into the air box, On the way home from one of my many trips out and about it started to run on less than 6 cylinders and when I got home I took off the air box and about 2 gallons of fuel flooded my garage floor :lol:.

So off came the offending carb (10 mins) took the carb to the bench dismantled the thing again (10 mins), Adjusted the float to the right height put it back together (10 mins) stuck it back on the car in yet another 10 minutes but had to take it off again because I'd fucked up the linkage :p, Problem solved time for a quick cupper then off for another long drive in the country, This time with a much improved top end  and no smell of petrol to choke on .

All in all it's been a wonderful few days my friends :D.

Rob

Yep nice one Rob, didn't know you was going to have that much fun the day you picked up that car from rainham eh, is the engine as i left it eg head block and pistons ?

Yes it is mate, I've no idea how good or bad it is but it holds very good oil pressure and seems to perform OK, I'm not sure if all that petrol washing down the bores has helped it's long term chances though :lol::lol:.

I changed the oil and filter tonight just in case, It was a bit of a waste of my £50 a bottle pro S racing oil but it's all I had to hand and I have a few more 5lt bottles in the garage so not a total loss ;).

I also have a spare 2.8 engine sitting in the garage that I bought off pistol Pete last year to rebuild when funds allow.

They are just wonderful cars, no wonder they have such a great reputation. AND so easy to work on if you keep them fairly standard i.e. not race engines.

Yes indeed I'll have to stop myself building some monster engine for it , A nice bit of head work a not to lairy cam and a nice set of 45's should do the job nicely, Unless I catch the drag racing bug that is ;), I'm so tall I wont be able to get a helmet on so track days look like they're out of the question, Unless I weld in a roof hump or something .

I bolted my race seat direct to the seat bracing i.e. no runners and I've got loads of head room. If you do that you may need a removable s.wheel but I get by and I've got a full cage with door bars too.

You don't need 45's trust me, 2" SUs work just fine I know you won't believe me though.

I do believe you Rob lol, I've just swapped needles on my SU's and that has made a bit of a difference to the way it performs, The trouble is I've had a new set of 45's sitting in my garage for over 2 years and it would be rude not to use them , Plus I LOVE the sound of webers on song .

Regarding the seat I've already had it modified to go back as far as pos even having the metal work behind the seat massaged with our trusty friend the big sledge :lol:. I can't bolt it direct to the mounting because my wife needs to be able to drive the car from time time, If I keep her interested I get to spend more on it so it's a sacrifice worth making lol.

I've just bought a slightly smaller 14" motolita steering wheels mainly because the standard one is just to spindly for my fat fingers .

Some how missed this, good well done. It feels satisfying to have done a good amount of the work yourself and it works! Enjoy the drive.
Cheers

Thanks Ian, I was just reading your account of driving in your rebuilt motor and I think I have a fair bit to go :D, Mine is just a starting point yours sounds like it's a lot further up the road in performance and terms .

I'm just pleased to of got it back on the road where it belongs mate.

LoL good effort John boy:lol::lol::lol:.

Thanks for the kind offer but you can keep your rag top matey .

I'm sure I'll eventually solve the head room issue some how, Maybe I'll lower the floor or something or except the fact that I'm a fat old bastard and really don't have any place on a track day anyway:eek::eek:.

Great offer that why did he have refused it :lol:alot cheaper than lowering the floor :)
SUNROOF who wants a SUNROOF

P.S. If anyone is in need of a roof skin I have one available

webers

Today I've spent the afternoon sticking my new webers on the manifold that I've had sitting in the garage for the last two years, I bought the kit from Mike as a kit supposedly for the 240/260 Z, I have to say I'm not very impressed with the kit at all.

I don't blame Mike at all but webcon or who ever he gets it from I'm not impressed with at all, Their are so many things wrong with it as a kit it's almost funny, My definition of a kit is something that actually fits together properly and works, Maybe I'm asking for to much . So far not only did they send out the wrong spacers twice even the 3rd lot still don't let the webers sit on the manifold with the choke control linkage still bolted to the carbs, And yes I understand that I probably wont need the choke but selling a manifold that wont work with it still attached is just ridiculous.

Also they where short of the correct spring washers and two of the 3 linkage rods when they sent it out originally, But worst of all is that the 3 control arms that go on the bar and are supposed to attach the the linkage rods that operate the carbs don't fit the rod ends at all , So far I've had to drill out the bolts holes to suit the rod ends and grind at least 1mm off each side of the arms so that the threaded part of the rod can actually have enough thread sticking out to get the nut on :(.

I don't mind making things fit I actually quite enjoy doing that kind of work, But when I've paid nearly £1300 for something that was sold as a kit I get very cross indeed, So be warned because it's either going to mean that you have to spend extra hours yourself sorting it out or get charged quite a few hours extra labour by who ever you have fitting the kit to make it all fit.
