The cost of restorations has rocketed you would easily spend £20k+ on parts labour paint etc i noticed around 4 good Zeds on auctions over the last couple of weeks that did not sell. I think i may start looking at the States for a more solid car like the red one that SacCyclone recently sold he was looking at around £18.5k including shipping. Or buying a car that has already been done.

I would think long and hard about buying ANY UK RHD 240/260z. I bought my first 240z in the early 80's. It looked good but was rotten as a pear. Eventually it had to go as there was just no metal left to weld to. I would much prefer to start with a rust free, un welded, un toughed Cali import and then convert to RHD. You should still be able to find one stateside for less than a rotten UK car that needs £15k+ just to get the shell solid again.

All just IMO.

Yes John. however my orange 240Z was exceptional so there might be 2 or 3 around.

There is no way I would buy a rusty S30 anymore - the grief is just too great and in the end you fall out of love with it!

Lets face it, would you buy any rusty car?

I think buying original UK cars is okay but you’re going to be buying a restored one for sure if you’ve any sense. And then there’s got to be photographic proof of the rebuild work - which may not be that great if it was done over 15 years ago before everyone had phones with cameras. Even then you’ve got to get down and dirty and look at the welds and quality of work yourself if you can. And then of course all that is going to affect the asking price.

thats a fair point rob, however there's so many more panels and quality parts around than there was over the past 15 years.

I'd be more worreid about the 'ringers' and some of the specailsts that might not practice honest work. If I was going fresh, i'd buy one done or one that I like the patina and wouldn't fall apart in my lifetime.

Your original one was lovely.

At auction at Brightwells now.

It will be interesting to see what it sells for incl fees etc and what the seller gets.

It was up to £14100. If it had sold for that price with the VAT and buyers fees it would have been about ££19300 + the cost of all the work.

Yep, if someone wants a rhd uk 260 as a project this could be worth considering. Running car but needs bodywork which won't be easy or a 2 minute job. Andy Plant could sort this but the total cost after resto would be more than it's resale value. Often the case. However it offers opportunities for someone wanting to get into S30s. Be careful and have a practical plan.

I might be wrong but surely that would have put it at just under 16.2k? Vat would only apply to the buyers premium not the winning bid as the car will not be vat qualifying.

VAT would apply to the high bid and buyers premium. Only certain goods are VAT exempt such as children's clothing, food etc...

Good UK cars are out there, like Robs old car, mine and others. Mine now needs some tlc, but by no means a UK stereotypical rust bucket. If a Z has been garaged all its life, they don't just disintegrate but a few harsh winters on UK roads is a different matter.....

I think cars like this harken back to an "older era" in the UK Z (and classic car) scene - when they were worth a lot less, restoration works were way cheaper and/or carried out on a limited budget and with very questionable methods and choices employed. The aim often being to keep something on the road/get it on the road as cost-effectively as possible and so that it looked okay from a few feet away. The type of work done meant that long-term survivability without fastidious care was unlikely - hence such a vehicle now being a rot box. Given the aforementioned explosion in restoration costs and much more sophisticated ideas of what a resto should entail in detail and quality, it means that such a vehicle would require expense well beyond any insurance or resale value unless the buyer has the time and capability to do the majority of the work themselves. This affects its sale-ability as a project. Those of us who know what we are looking at will place a very low value on such a car because of the obvious extent of the work needed. Someone buying into Zs for the first time who doesn't know what they are getting into might be more inclined to dive in - and regret it later unless they have deep pockets.

Personally, I wouldn't pay above four figures for it. It will need massive bodywork restoration in just about every area of the car before you even get near anything else. I guarantee every issue you start to tackle will reveal 2-3 more in the process. The first action of any buyer should be to get on KF Vintage JDM's website and order basically every single panel Gerson makes! Because most will be required.
