Hi folks,
Im thinking about buying a TVR Chimaera possibly the 5litre version.
Can anyone give me any positives or negatives about them.

Yes I know they dont compare with my 240z, (slightly faster, and more comfy i think) a different motor altogether, but does anyone have any experience or know anyone who has had.
interested to know.
Thanks.
Don.

they rattle, leak water into the car, have constant electrical problems, expensive to maintain, even TVR garages hate them, but great fun. i can put you in touch with a really good TVR garage if you get one.

Eerrr Yuk, Ive heard about the leaks, but, well, oh sh*t, I really like the look of the car. Its either that or put my name on the waiting list for a Porshe Caymen, but thats an 18 month wait.

No experience with them sadly, I wouldnt mind they look the business and sound amazing. I have gone off fast cars a bit, the Z is fast enough for me and I am actually toying with the idea of Citroën DS ownership. Anyone got one here??

Don, have a read at what some TVR owners have said on carsurvey.org Click Here

Speak to Mr Lack - my personal expert on TVRs !

Why not have Zhead build you a V8 Z - best of both worlds !

OK let's cut through the crap here. I owned a Cerbera (yes the one that's supposed to be even more unreliable and expensive) for two years. All that went wrong was the starter motor. A Mitsubishi item it should be said. The Chimeara and Griffith are now an older generation of TVR, what isn't known about them will never be known. They have very straight forward mechanics, extremely robust chassis and if looked after well - as you would with any sports car - will last you as long as you want. There's plenty of specialists out there now as well, just because you're in Kent don't be thinking Waldonway is your only option!!

The Chimaera is a comfy motor for sure and with a frankly huge boot, for that long weekend, or fortnight away with the missus. There's also plenty available on the second hand market in all engine configurations, as ever buying the newest model you can means you get the most up to date kit, but don't be put off the older models, a well looked after early car will be better than a thrashed newer motor, and there are very few cars that sound as good as the 4.3 pre-cat V8 models. The engine choice is of course purely personal, 4, 4.3, 4.5 & 5. I drove a 4l for a week and it happily span the rears in 3rd. The 5l is obviously a beasty, a lot of people consider the 4.5l to be the best match for the chassis though. Just drive loads, they'll all feel slightly different, it can't be helped with hand built machines. Don't expect it to drive like your Z though, oh boy no!! You'll need a left leg of steel ;) I went for a test drive in a Griff a bit before buying my Z and about a year after selling my Cerbie, I could hardly get the clutch in at first!

Costs will be fuel and insurance, mainly fuel, but you should be able to get low 20s on a steady run. Push it and what can I say, I once saw my fuel gauge going down before my eyes. That was at an indicated 180mph though ;)

Best place you'll find for more info about these is:

Absolutely everything you'll ever need to know is there. Just don't forget the golden rule of car forums, people only ever come on to moan about something going wrong!!

Don't be put of by the doomsday merchants, they're awesome cars!

Cheers,
Rob

Sorry, I must have clicked the wrong link and ended up on some rich persons' car website (just joking I am happy for you lot if you can afford decent cars)

Rob - why did I not know you when you had a cerbera. I would have killed for a go in one of those:D

Nice choice of car Don although my experience is limited to one short test drive of a 4.2 chimera a few years back ( not that I could afford it however)

Seriously Don, you don't want one of those, apart from serious reliability issues and shit roadholding / handling, you need to carry your mechanic around with you, a very good friend of mine went through a few diffs and engines amongst other failures while the car was still under warranty, after he got rid of it quick time, I remember racing one in my trusty old 944turbo not only did I wipe him out on the straights 3 up, to his one but on accelerating around the bend from the 406 at Hanger lane towards the A40 London bound, we were on the outside overtaking him and he lost it nearly T boned us, and crashed straight into the concrete wall on the underpass, split the car literally in half, luckily for him he was unhurt, but seriously shaken, protected by the chassis I guess but the bodywork, suspension and wheels were all was all over the place..................not good.......... Sounds out of this world though, for this all you need is a V8 in your Z, with a bit of sound engineering in the exhaust flow you will sound even better
