Stuck throttle - Overrev - Before we take it apart, what do you guess I have broken.

There are a couple of good how to guides on Youtube for an L series engine for this.

Turn the engine with the appropriate size socket on the crank pulley nut. Put the car in neutral gear and turn the engine clockwise (recheck clockwise is the right direction - don't take my word for it).

I recall finding in a Nissan supplementary workshop manual that COLD exhaust is 0.24mm. That's what I go for. Intake 0.20mm COLD

Lock nut torque is 36 to 45 ft lb (say 54 Nm). (Confirm these numbers from your own source) I use a crows foot spanner and torque wrench which after calculating the adjustment for the extra centimetre of the crows foot gives 49 Nm torque on the nut.
 
It's .20 and .25 cold and .25 and .30 hot for stock.

I think .24 is a result of rounding errors converting to inches and back again
 
So, rattle is gone, but she's running lumpy. We didn't compression test it but got the bore scope in there and all looks grand.

All valves were close to where they should be other than number one which was loose and needed like 10mm of tightening. Given how the complete valve and spring assembly goes together do you have any ideas what could have happened for it to be this far out?



I probably won't have a chance to touch it until the weekend now.
 
10mm not Thou?

Lash pad in place?

I suspect a bent valve.

You need to do a compression test anyway but just pull the plug leads off one at a time to find the 'duff' cylinder..
 
Hey guys, ended up having to take the head off to find the problem. One bent exhaust valve. I sent the head off to a specialist to get it all checked out, and it turned out that was the only damage.

The guide was fine as were the rest of the valves but whilst it was there I had it stripped down and cleaned, valves reseated and a tickle of the ports. In the meantime a full gasket set has arrived from the USA so all being well I will get it all back together tomorrow.

Soon after, I am going to replace my sump gasket so we'll have a good check-over of the bottom end whilst the pan is off.

Until we fire it up I can't be 100% so I am not going to claim a lucky escape yet, but fingers crossed.
 
It took a lot longer than I hoped due to the other things going on but she's back and better than ever.
