One seat belt buckle is stamp Datsun Richard and made in England at the back...

i Don't know more....

More informations

Mick280 from England give me this informations:

My janspeed conversion version was introduce in 1983 where the Microdynamics ignition was an extra, that cost 75 pounds at this time ( so my conversion was done after 1983 not in 1980 like i was thinging)

The cost for the Janspeed conversion was 900 pounds in 1981

First carburetor seems to be SU HS 7 2" and after 1983 SU HIF 44 (from Range Rover V8 apparently...)

I tried to put Janspeed docs in my gallery....

In England, the task of discovering past information about ones car is a little easier as we can send a request to the Driving Vehicle Licence Authority (DVLA) for a list of addresses of previous owners. Maybe a similar system exists in France?

If it does, and you can obtain a list of past owners and addresses, you could write a nice letter introducing yourself and ask your questions. It would probably be best to include a prepaid envelope for them to post the information back to you.

My '78 260Z 2+2 had a janspeed turbo fitted when I went to view it before buying it atZ-Bitz. It had the conversion ID plate fitted but as a condition of the sale the turbo conversion was removed. I still have the plate somewhere in my garage

janspeed kit remove!

Why have you remove the kit?
because the seller want to keep it for him or did you afraid to be outlaw with this kit?

Can you find the plate to give me the conversion number so i could note it as remove kit and probably in the nature...:(

or if you know who have put the kit on his car, can you tell him to subscribe to the janspeed registatration in the forum!

Thank you
Benoit

Hi Benoit,
Sorry can´t help you with any Janspeed info but you are probably the closest Z owner to me. I live near Barcelona in Spain. Maybe we should try to get together to share a few cold beers, that´s if they still sell cold beers in France

Thank you for your Help Ben

I have already contact them but my English hearing and speaking wasn't good enough to well understand
i have been in contact with Becky, Mattew Stone, and Mark Vaughan
i could understand some good infos about timing advance, spark plug type, but for other things it is to difficult

Here is what i need if you could obtain...

1- What is the right person to contact at Janspeed and his Email, to have some good information about, tuning, history, parts to buy

2- My car have the optionnal Microdynamics EMS3 ignition unit and i need to tune it, could you ask for :
- the procedure to tune the boost retard, and rpm limiter on the unit (there is to screw on the unit for that) and how to tune also the advance with this unit (because a switch permit to bypass it (perhaps for ignitial adavance tuning?)

- My distributor (D609-56A) was modified (vacumm advance was remove) because of the EMS3 unit probably
but i notice that there is only one spring for the centrifugal mechanic advance, is this a Janspeed modification also? Or as i think a bad mechanics intervention in France?
because i have full advance as soon 2000rpm....when i check it

- as i probably change the pressure switch, there are two on the plenum, at which pressure are they tune (for two step boost retard)?

Also perhaps i will upgrade to the EMS5 unit witch is more reliable...because i have some problem with my EMS3, (some ignition cut)

3- i probably need some parts for the turbo, particulary for the wastegate could they supply a new wastegate (pictures) or the rubber membrane, valve and guide??? and at what price?

THANKS YOU FOR ANYTHING YOU COULD DONE

hi there benoit. sorry for the delay . I have spoken with janspeed and unfortuneately it is not good news. The company has changed hands a couple of times and there are no records of the work that was done with the turbo 240/260 . There are a couple of guys still there from the early days but they are unable to recall the information that you are after. They have seen a great deal of different cars and projects go through since then.
They have not got any spares left and seem to concentrate mainly on exhaust manufacture now with some modern engine tuning. sorry I cant be more help. Cheers ben

Reference the ignition side of Benoit's car, I would suggest that the EMS3 and subsequent EMS5 were particularly unreliable units designed to convert to a version of electronic ignition. They were also difficult to adjust via the tiny screws under the two caps at one end of the unit. One screw set the rev limiter and the other the retard under boost. The latter function was triggered from the lower pressure version of the two manifold switches on the 280ZX, but probaly a single switch on the carb versions for 240Z / 260Z. The idea is that the "retard per 1000rpm" setting was triggered as soon as boost started, so the switch would have been 0.5 - 1.0 psi. This can only be set with the car on a rolling road with suitable ignition readings being monitored, as the screw on the EMS3 or 5 is not visibly calibrated.

As a simpler alternative, swap the distributor to the 280ZX electronic ignition version and use the Microdynamics EMS6 ignition retard module. This has an easily adjusted and calibrated rotary dial on the front and can set retard per 1000 rpm betwwen 0 and 3.5 degrees.

Here’s a story about Jan Odor written in Autosport November 74

Guus
the Z-point in the World of Datsun rallying

"Colourful fearsome cars were roaring in the woods again. The sight and sound of the mighty Datsun 240Z's will long be savoured"

BTW I just learned that Janspeed have opened a small museum of Janspeed history at the Salisbury factory and have held an open day for car clubs there this year - factory tour, dyno shoot-out etc. It is my intention to try and get the Z Club to participate in one of these in 2007.
