Progress is slow but getting there.

Thanks guys.

I finished off the drivers side set up today and also fitted the new braided hose and made up a short section of solid brake line, I didn't like the look of the brake hoses that come with the kit so made my own.

You can see in this next picture that I've lock wired the springs in place now.

Next shot is the drivers side front brake set up, I'm just waiting for the caliper paint to dry.

The last two pictures are one of the rear struts after stripping it and having it blasted, I then primed it with zinc primer for now, I will spray it with satin black smoothrite this week sometime.

I thought I'd pop out to the garage as I found myself with an hour of free time, And was just in the middle of fitting the drivers side front caliper when I noticed my deliberate mistake lol, Something didn't look quite right. I had fitted them the wrong sides because the bleed nipples where on the bottom of the caliper lol, So had to strip them both down again and do it properly :eek::eek::eek:.

I feel a right wally now .

lol, easily done :D Great work buddy, keep it up. Taking ages as all projects do but the end result will be worth it :)

Cheers bud, I will be starting on the rear set up once I've made the new brake lines for the drivers side front, What will hold me up is actually affording it . I've ordered a new rear bearing set for the rear and grumpy (Pete) is selling me a second hand set of hubs after me destroying mine with a big hammer :lol:.

I had a lucky break when I picked up a set of sentra rear caliper brackets from fleabay USA for £25 delivered , But the centre hole is smaller than my uprights and I thought I have to buy a new pair of custom brackets because the machine shops wanted far to much to open out the holes, But I had a lucky break when I discovered my fathering law has a milling machine at work ;), And will do them for nothing (result lol).

All I need to find then is a set of Sentra calipers and I can crack on, It would be easier to just buy a proper rear disc conversion I suppose but they're all way over priced in my opinion .

I hope you have ordered a second set of bearings as well;)
If not the price of them hubs has just gone up.

Pah!... You would never have noticed if I didnt tell you they were crap:rolleyes: and didnt have the correct ends!

Anyway call me tomorrow as I need you to give me the top hat measurement of that exotic $19.00 papier mache disc from China that you have fitted on the front.

Actually no I didn't buy it from siverline and I did ask the guy about the disc's, And was told whether true or not that he has been using them on his own car for over 2 years with out issue including the odd track day.

Just because they're zinc coated doesn't mean they're sh1t does it .

no offence meant rob. i hope it's a good set up.
we'll both find out soon enough. well maybe not that soon with me.

did you get that kit from e bay? it does look virtually same as mine.
and mine had the same issues with the hoses.
the rest of the build looks cracking. i hope you living far away in outer space won't stop you from coming to the meets in the car, when ready.

No offence taken mate, I did speak to him and say I wasn't impressed by the hoses and he is looking into changing them for better quality ones with the correct end, Saying that they do work I just prefer to do the job properly myself, And a little effort should see a better longer lasting job.

The pads that came with the kit are nothing special and once I've bedded everything in I'll probably change them for something a bit more track day friendly, All in all for the money it cost I'm happy enough and everything fitted OK, My one concern is that the discs can move around a fraction on the bolts, So I'm not convinced that they are 100% centered, I will see what it's like to drive. If their is any vibration I may have to look at some thin inserts to make the disc's a tight fit on the bolts.

I managed to get hold of a new rear bearing set from the states for £150 all in which wasn't to bad I believe, Including new seals.

This is the tricky one to find.

You know whats the worst part of doing these bloody cars up ?, Waiting/finding the right bloody parts that's what lol, Oh and when you do know what you want/need actually waiting months to get hold of the bloody stuff can be a right pain in the ass......

As you know I'm converting the rear drum's to a nice EASY to work on disc set up instead, Now I could of done it the easy way and bought a kit from Mike or the states, But me being me I thought I'd learn more by finding the parts myself I could then swan about with a smug grin on my face :D.

So far I found a nice set of caliper mounting brackets from Fleabay.com for £25 delivered from the states, Which didn't fit because the centre bore was to small. I solved that problem free of charge because my nice fathering law had them machined for me at his work :cool:, Then Mike supplied a 280 rear caliper which fits my bracket perfectly (just need the other bloody side now Mike ), He also supplied a set of 280 disc's and I thought to myself job jobbed ;):D ( starts wearing that smug grin ;) ).

But as we all know nothing is that simple is it :confused:, The 280 disc's are not only to small the top hat is way to deep for my bracket/caliper combo, So after a bit of research I've found a company that will make me a pair of discs for about £100 + vat each which isn't to bad I don't think, Considering that they normally make all their disc kits from AP racing blanks. In my case they will make them from scratch because I only need a 12 mm top hat, I've been out and measured up, I'll let you know how I get on :D.

That's pretty frickin' cool though (all peeps and life bashing aside), that you'll know exactly what's going on behind you and it'll be a complete one-off deal. More of a custom bit that you have been a part of physically (and spiritually!). Superb! Pics pleasey-weasey when you have 5 minutes (and a working product, or even just some bits...).

The cost issue for me was in the time it takes to find all the parts, I'd rather pay a little more for a complete kit. I think DJ's rear kit cost me £400 for the lots including handbrake cables fixings etc plus he removed and fitted my rear wheel bearings when I went to pick the kit up free of charge...that's where the real value is.

£400 is a pretty good price, Mine will probably end up costing me over £500 so I kinda agree with you it would of been a lot less hassle to buy a complete kit, But not as much fun and I wouldn't of learnt anything ;).

Hello all ;).

So it looks like I'm finally managing to solve the issue's I had with converting the rear drum set up to disc operation, After trawling through page after page of yank rubbish I finally concluded that they're all mad lol, The ones using the same flat sentra caliper mounting plates I have are having to have them machined thinner and weld this and that to make them work, My solution is far simpler in my humble opinion and that is just to have a pair of custom disc's made up :D.

Here's a few shots of my newly rebuilt struts with sentra caliper mounted and rebuilt 280 caliper care of Mike, In this first picture you can see I have the to small 280 disc mounted just to get a feel of how it will al look once done, Ive ordererd a set of bigger 290mm disc's with a shallow 13.5mm top hat to suit my mounting plates.

All I'm waiting for now is the other caliper from Mike if he ever finds it and new top mounts also from Mike , Hopefully sooner rather than later :smash::lol::lol:.

Just a thought - I fitted a DJ kit and it works fine. It included a new handbrake cable but I did have to extend the handbrake lever arm (near propshaft) to get sufficient movement at the caliper end. Not everyone has to do this according to DJ, but worth knowing if your handbrake lever (designed for drums) has too much travel.

Buying a complete kit is probably the best option for most, But I'm quite enjoying finding out what parts will work and what doesn't. I've ordered my new discs now, I just hope I measured everything properly lol....
