Optronic ignition

Has anyone fitted optronic ignition to their Z?

I fitted one of my 4.2 V8 Bowler back in 2006 and she's still running perfectly (on SUs). So I think it would make sense to fit it to my 260Z. Hopefully they make them for the straight 6.

I'd be interested to hear of anyone who has done this. Thanks!

Yes, my trackday 240Z had Optronic ign. It worked well - no better than a 280ZX distributor though. I tried them both on the same day.

Hi Rob. It's not a case of being the same... they do that exactly. It's just that you don't have to tinker with the point all the time. I remember doing that with my Capri in my teens. Pain in the arse.

I've never had to maintain my Pertronix, I only replaced it for an identical one for peace of mind

The downside of the Pertronix system is that as I understand it, it relies on the old dizzy body and just replaces the points etc. If the dizzy shaft or bushes are worn it could throw out any pickup from the new bits. I have the 123 ignition system in mine along with quite a few others and they have had their issues but it seems ok when set up correctly. There is another system but the name of it escapes me! Not heard of Optronic.

Their FK637 fitting kit is for the Hitachi 6cyl distributors used on 'our' cars.

I've used them for many years. Pretty much fit and forget. Good product.

If it's any guide, Kameari Engine Works have sold them for many years. I helped them negotiate a wholesale supply deal with manufacturer Autocar Electrical Equipment Co. in London SE.1 when I lived just around the corner!

Awesome, thanks Albrecht... you've given me the fitting kit code. I think I will go down this route as I did with my truck.

My optronic luminition worked well and gave good power. I tried a 280ZX dizzy and it also gave good power and I think the engine was smoother across the rev range. However that could have been related to bob-weight advance curve or wear. It wasn't my ZX dizzy so I gave it back because any improvement was small and not worth changing for (£). It was interesting to me though.
