Front indicators

My Dad had an Austin 1800 wedge - later called the Princess - which had an eight-track stereo fitted in it during the mid 70s. To my memory he only ever had two cassettes for it - one a greatest hits of Dean Martin and the other (which I used to put on) by a band called Argent. Whenever I hear their big hit 'Hold Your Head Up' (remember that anyone?) I think of that big Austin.

I bought my first 260z (new) in 1974 and the indicators were hung beneath the front bumper at delivery.

Mmmm I'm still not sure that's correct, I need to find some brochure pics.

Was there any 'over-spray' on the bumper ;)

They were often sent with the car from Japan, and installed by the local UK dealer as part of the pre-sale 'prep'.

In your car's case, the UK dealer mounted them in the position that the ( optional ) fog lamps were supposed to go.

Two points about the UK indicators - if mounted below the bumper, the one marked "L" will be on the right and the one marked "R" will be on the left, Also, look at the grille - it has bits missing where the bulb holder sticks out and the wires pass through.
Top mount is original...

Although my 'new' 260z had 'below' indicators (interesting from the thread that they were supplied to uk distributors to fit where they thought best) might that not make it correct?. My current Z (also a 74) only has holes on the underside of the bumper. Does this mean it is fitted upside down? I wonder whether the original (240z) above the bumper was changed (after all the 260s was all about US regulation) to below the bumper to satisfy mounting height of the lights. For me 'below' just looks right. 'Above' looks like wearing reading glasses up-side-down!

I agree with you. My bumper also only has holes on the underside, and I think they look better and tidier mounted underneath.

The 'beneath' position is clear on the current e-bay ad (Datsun 260z 1974). There are so many sources of information it is likely (dependent upon where the cars were imported to) that 'above' the 'beneath' or 'lower quarter' all are period correct. The rear indicator assemblies are also different on 240z's and 260's (the latter incorporate reversing lights) perhaps again a requirement of the time.

Front Bumper Indicators

Here is a scan of the relevant page of my 1978 260Z owner's manual, which states the indicators are "...located on bumper", which I guess could be read two ways! However, the fixings are indicated at the bottom, meaning the assemblies are mounted on top of the bumper. The doesn't seem to be a similar page in the 240Z manual I have.

Also, I have scanned various pages from European brochures which all illustrate the front indicators located on top of the bumper.

I've just pulled the bumper off my '73 to find holes on both sides, maybe a bit of a one of. The "droids" are mounted on the top by the way.

However looking at the usual "one pair of holes" Z front bumper, can it not be mounted either way up? So the bumper can be fitted one way for UK style indicators and then have the hole side face down for the wing mounted US versions, making it one item fits all :)

You could be right - they are very cunning, those Japanese, you know.

So, just to sum up, they can be mounted above or below the bumper but the best place to put them is in the bin :)

Sorry IMO

You may as well John, there's not many Datsun bits left on your Datsun. However I agree the originals were the better looking - bit like MGB bumpers.

I don't think the bumper can be turned over - what about the number-plate brackets? Also note that a 240 bumper is not the same as a 260 as far as I know.

240 / 260Z front bumpers are interchangeable for the UK market. USA bumpers (and other world markets) showed numerous variations...

I guess I had that coming.

I have always thought that they looked like an afterthought and that's what they were. They do spoil IMO the clean lines of the front of a Z and that's why a lot of people swap to the American style quarter indicators. If you want to keep originality then mount them on top, but its your car so your allowed to mount them however you want or not at all.

Well said, my man!
