Did anyone notice this article in this week's Motorsport News?
Gary Hicks' ex Old Woking Service Station/ex Harry Kallstrom car will be back in action at Abingdon in June.
Obviously needed the safety gear brought up to date - it will be great to see it in action!
I'll be there! (but in the LH seat of a Mini!)
Hugh

I'm on holiday in Madeira Hugh so not seen it yet but thanks for the 'heads up'. This place has got some really fantastic rally roads - Yes I've seen the IRC on TV so I know it's used.

Does the car in question has an LY28 crossflow engine in it?? worth going to see if it has :)

Just go & see it anyway - I don't think that it has been used in anger for many a year. Last time I saw it mentioned was in a Magazine Track Test in the early 90's driven by Andy Dawson.

Now, if only Kevin Bristow could bring his Works car out to play at the same time - what a nice reunion.

No, it is UK registration number 'LPE 66P' - formerly Japanese 'carnet' temp-export registration number 'TKS 33 SU 4079'. The car first seen on the '73 RAC driven by Kallstrom, and with a CV as long as your arm.......

'cos the LY is a cross flow head....

This feels like one of those moments on QI when you give the obvious, but wrong answer :)

If you look at the engine bay pics you can see that the exhaust manifold is still on the LH side.
That car is fitted with a big, straight stainless system which runs under everything and is only about 2.5 ins off the ground! Usually this would be dodgy on a rally car but Abingdon is pretty smooth.
The fuel tank or fuel cell is under the floor at the back (big filler under the flap in the tailgate with the J on it) - there is no spare wheel well. The tank guard under it (compulsory for rallies) comes right over the the LH side of the car where the normal exhaust exit would have been.
Maybe the car originally had the twin megaphone exhaust system but it might not have passed the current rally 100dB noise test?

Thanks for bringing those pics to the Forum, Hugh.

Very significant car, and great to see it out in action again.

Yes Hugh......but none of that explains why bring the exhaust across to the other side. The tank, like that of many other comp. cars can be placed centrally or to the rh side of the car, easily allowing a pipe and box on the lh side.

Sean are you refering to the rear of the car and as to why (despite the exhaust manifold being on the left hand side of the engine) the exhaust exits on the right hand side rather than the left hand side.

On another note, look at the second engine bay pic of the induction setup and the angle of the carbs....that would significantly straighten up the inlet tract and reduce the port radius flow restrictions....not sure that the floats in the carbs work best at that angle though:unsure:...however it seems to work.

What I would give for an LY setup (body parts anyone)

Whilst ogling the car on Saturday evening, I met Adrian Patten who used to be a good Datsun rally driver until having a stroke about 3 years ago.( good to see him recovering well)
He said that during the Sprint a plug had blown out of the head and had been re-fixed using "liquid metal" - no chance of a replacement head! It seemed to be surviving the rally remarkably well.
Apart from modern seats, rollcage and extinguishers, the car looked remarably original, so I guess the tank is in its original position precluding the exit of the exhaust on the LH side.
To be honest, the exhaust they were using did look a bit of an afterthought and would not survive anything other than smooth tarmac....
