Ethanol in fuels.. additive to combat it..

Obviously not cheap at over ten pounds a bottle, and each bottle only giving you enough to cover two fill-ups. How does this compare to say the Millers one which seems better value. Anybody got any experience of these?

I take it that adding this stuff doesn't screw the running of the car?

If you use something like Miller's VSPe Power Plus, it will positively make it run better. Puts 2 points on the octane rating, i.e. with V-Power will give you 100RON.

My car definitely sounds more beastly when running an additive like that then when not.

Millers products are excellent. I use Millers Classic Sport as my engine oil and wouldn't hesitate to buy any of their other products.

In fact, I'm off to Halfords to pick up some VSPe in my lunch break. This thread has been a reminder!

But is this additive really necessary? I've been running classic 70s cars for the last 11 years now, four years with my current Z, and not had any fuel system problems. Is it just another scare story?

I too haven't experienced any problems over the last 10 years. I wonder that only the earliest Z's require lead replacement and perhaps if anyone is sufficiently persuaded then the lower cost Millers EPS is probably adequate. Even this at £6.00 a bottle (I gather it does 8 gallons) is pretty shocking. Adds about 75p per gallon (unless my maths are as usual wrong!). According to the makers splurge the product 'combats effects of ethanol up to E10' (yes I get that);), prevents fuel system corrosion :(hmm!, carb anti-icing  wot! and compatible with cat converters .

For now I will carry on as always but renew fuel lines now and again:unsure:

Halfords currently advertising Millers VSPe on their website for £3 a bottle down from £7.99. But you try and find a store that has any left - and they won't let you do their delivery or 'click and collect' option for some reason. But managed to track down 12 bottles at three different stores relatively close to me . . . so that's my Friday off sorted then! But other members may find them at other stores round the country. Massive saving!

My, what exciting lives we all lead!

I now need to try do the same, but Graham is closer to our local Halfords so he may empty the place before I get there

Don't blame me Richie! The Macc store was not one of the ones I raided - promise! I did Stockport, Cheadle and Ashton-U-Lyne. Not prepared to go any further afield.

I'm planning to raid Preston this afternoon.... ;)

Do you basically dump the whole bottle in after each fill up? Whilst at the pump preferably??

It says one 250ml bottle covers 40 litres so the answer must be yes. Not too bad at £3 a bottle but expensive at £7.99!
When I had my Capri I used to have to use a lead replacement and octane boost, and used one called Castrol Valvemaster Plus. That was about £10 a bottle but it used to treat five tankfuls (it was a 250ml bottle and you had to put 50ml in each fill - there were marks down the side of the bottle).
That didn't seem too bad - but it does not offer ethanol protection. It must be that element of it that means you need a 250ml dose of the Millers product.
The thing is I don't believe my 260Z needs lead replacement, nor do I really need the octane boost as I use Shell V-Power petrol anyway. What I probably need is just an ethanol-protecting product so will hunt about to see if I can find something that should be cheaper. Don't fancy adding £7.99 to each fill-up once my £3 bottles have all been used up!

I agree with you mate, I don't mind £3 a fill up but £7.99 would be pushing it. If you find an ethanol-protectant let us know! :)

Unfortunately MJP has none left tried last week. I have just reserved last12 bottles from local Halfords.
I great deal I must admit.
I have been buying mine from MJP for the last 2 years and using all 10 bottles each year.
I put in one bottle per full tank and have had no problems as yet!!

If you don't already use one of these stabilisers, Its important thing to remember to try to leave your tank empty if you are going to let the car sit for more then 3 weeks. It would make sense if the pumps had a little button on them to blast a little ethanol stabiliser for those that need it...

Oooops! Especially as I have a bottle of the millers sitting on the shelf next to the car .........

Just been to halfords near work, 3 bottles at £2.79, 2xhalf price 4.5L 20w50, 2x half price redex, everything double bagged, arms falling off.

The security guys at the office entrance with airport scanners will be very "excited" when I get back!
