drag challenge

If I get 270 bhp, I'll be very happy, the last 3.0ltr produced 238 at the wheels but I'm not a greedy man and It is a ROAD car so needs to be reliable and economical..ish !

I did say, I'd like to be in the top five, not THE fastest - it would be bad manners to whup Steve after all his hard work (and money?) and vulgar to aim to be the best for five minutes ;-) After all, there is always someone prepared to go that little bit further !

I might just take the opportunity on this "drag" thread to let you all know that the regular Z32 midlands guys will not be attending the pre season warm up as it clashes with a big 300ZX.co.ok meet at Ferrybridge(we do scenic meets you know!)
However it sems likely we will be there on Mar 12 instead(weather permitting)

And as usual a warm welcome for ANYONE in ANY NISSAN goes out to come and join us.
No doubt I will be doing a "newbie" talk thru and look see at the track for anyone who has not been before.
Cost is usually one cup of coffee.

Pete, Wife permitting may I come if thats ok.

Contrary to what many people believe -- I have no issue about being beaten, its inevitable -- I dont want it to happen but I am confidant that it will happen this year, there are several contenders and a sense of purpose that hasnt been around for some time, when this happens it means that boundaries have been pushed forward and whoever beats that time will truley understand just how quick a 30 year old NA car can be and just how much effort is required to do it--- no shame there, this whole experiance has taught me a greater respect for Steve Adams and what he acheived.
Plus at least I can claim that I beat an 8 year old record, that wont happen for another 7 years:D.

Bloody Steve Adams beat me by 100th second have had to live with that for the last 8 years will have to see what this year brings (hopefully a quicker time)

Don't worry Steve, it won't be boring ol' me and my carbs that beat you - I haven't got the time, experience or opportunity to do that - if I come over and do a drag run, it'l be once and the odds that I'll fluff it are evens ;-) !

It is great that the boundaries are being pushed and that is what is called healthy competition !

Dave, I feel for you mate, so what is better in your car now that your old one didn't have ? Remember, it's not the same competition as 8 years ago - it's got stiffer, like........

Early car = lighter
Better Engine = quicker
Better designed cam = more power top end
Better Clutch = More power to rear wheels
Better LSD ratio = faster 1/4 time
Better set rear tyres = more grip
Better track traction @ Santa Pod = faster 1/4 time
SO MUST BE QUICKER THAN 8 YEARS AGO @ 13.78
BUT WILL HAVE TO SEE

What makes you think your early car is lighter and by how much ?
In what way better engine, same cc no ? Same carbs no ?
Better clutch , So you slipped before ?
Better diff ratio - road compromise ?
better set rear tyres - did you not have the best before ?

And aren't you heavier now :) ?

What is YOUR rolling road bhp figure ? Is your car lighter than Skiddys', does it have more than 250 bhp ?

Lots have changed over the last 8 years lots more internet parts (Ebay) the early 240z were lighter the sam was a 1973 build date all the spoilers and arches were all made out of metal (the rear tailgate weighed a ton) the roll cage was metal ,no fiberglass doors or bonnet so yes the sam will weight more than my new Z.Engine built to same spec as the sam but head work is better now ,better cam than we had 8 years ago .New cannon inlet manifold that flows better than my old sam one that was made in 1975 ,the clutch on the sam was a standard 280zx item no it did not slip but the new one is a centerforce dual friction that will be better, the diff ratio is better today than was available 8 years ago and as to the tyres you can now buy semi-slick road going tyres, rolling road set up will be done on the 28th of this month so will have to see what the new one has

So your panels are fibre-glass ?

Curious to know what the bhp read as :) as I'm sure you are ! What was your diff ratio then and now ?

No standard panels but no arches and no big spoilers,
Diff then 4-3 now 3-7 that also weighs 25lbs lighter than my old one also have a set of brand new drive shafts that have no play so that will also help,

Yes, I saw your drive shafts and your scooby dif ;-)

Mine's a classic R200 Nismo 3.9 LSD - boring aint I ?

Sorry Dave but your not getting away with it that easily.

so yes the sam will weight more than my new Z
Did you weigh you old sham sam (oops:D ) and have you weighed your new one???

Engine built to same spec as the sam

What was the spec of your sam engine (chamber size cc’s, valve profile, chamber shape, piston to head clearance, valve lift, squish area, piston to head clearance) its only if these were accurately recorded that you can make an engine to the same spec, anyway why not aim higher.

but head work is better now
Did you measure the flow rate of your old head verses your new head

better cam than we had 8 years ago
What was the exact profile of your old cam verses your new one

New cannon inlet manifold that flows better than my old sam one that was made in 1975
did you flow test your old one verses your new one, if not how do you know.

but the new one is a centerforce dual friction that will be better
Because

the diff ratio is better today than was available 8 years ago
The same ratios available today were available 30 years ago

He's back - how I've missed his royal pedanticness ;-)

My clutch is an AP unit, better because.....I was told so :)

yes all weighed yes new car is lighter all flowed all better than before have spent the last 2 years looking at ALL the options spent 8 months looking for a good early 240z to restore Mark spent 6 months building the engine the machine shop that flowed the head spent 2 months on that i have all the data from old to new if the car does not beat your time skidders I WILL SHOW MY ARSE IN BURTONS WINDOW ON A SATURDAY MORNING AT THE TRAFFORD CENTRE !!! on paper the car is quicker but the proof of the pudding is in the eating

on paper the car is quicker
Based upon what......some "this + this must equal that" calculations!!

Your comparing your new set up to a set up of some years ago rather than a car that has run a quicker time, you may be right but the logic that you use to support it is flawed.

I WILL SHOW MY ARSE IN BURTONS WINDOW ON A SATURDAY MORNING AT THE TRAFFORD CENTRE !!!
Would you want cover or centre spread in the mag:D
