Door lock mechanism advice

My 280z has issues on both door locks, which essentially means I can't unlock the doors from the outside, even when the key has been used to supposedly unlock the doors. So I have to keep the windows down at all time, in order to release the door locks from the inside.

On the driver's door, the lock plunger knob/peg thing is quite loose, and it won't push down into the locked position. However, I can pull it up slightly in order to allow both the exterior and interior handles to open the door. In fact that's the only way I can open the driver's door.

On the passenger door, the lock knob/peg works nicely - you can push it down and it snaps into place to lock the door. However, as with the driver's door, even when the peg is up, you can't open the door from the outside, only from the inside.

Looking inside both doors, I can't really see a reason for the driver's side exterior handle not working.

But on the passenger side, the rod that connects the lock to the exterior handle appears to have broken off at the handle end:

Looking at the diagram in the How to Restore Your Z Car book, I think I can just replace the door handle assembly to fix this?:

The driver's side is more of a mystery, because the parts all seem attached, yet the lock knob doesn't snap into the lock position and the exterior handle doesn't work.

Perhaps the nylon nut on the end of the actuator rod needs to be further down the rod, like it suggests in the Haynes manual?:

Or perhaps I can just replace the entire main lock part circled here?:

Here's a video showing what I can see happening in the driver's door:

Any advice very welcome indeed!

I had issue with which was similar and it was interior door opener not sitting properly and not let me open the door from the outside handle

Thanks moggy. Which bit do you call the interior door opener? The interior handle?

If not, would you be able to circle the bit you mean on one of these diagrams please?

Doesn't seem to be be the door handle. They're both securely in place and both work well. I can't spot anything wrong with them.

On the driver's door the issue is something to do with the various levers & latches controlled by the push knob/peg thing. It won't push down into the lock position. Or it's permanently in the lock position - one of the two.

I think I'll just have to try a whole new lock mechanism as I can't spot any difference between the working passenger side and the non-working driver's side.

I'm not sure it'll be the lock mechanism - I think it'll be a bent rod or worn linkage or similar.

The driver's side lock mechanism has that broken spring......the push pull lock at the top will not stay in the lock / unlock position without replacing the tiny spring or whole lock mechanism. I did adjust the white plastic spin knob so that the door would open from the outside but you must first pull up on the door lock.

I took a look at the door handles on both sides and they did not appear to be broken so I would check that one again. The passenger side worked in Cali.

Remember, I did have the passenger side lock mechanism but not the driver's side....they are not interchangeable.

With both doors closed and windows down, pull up and down on the door lock pulls....you can see the difference between the two.

Thanks Mike! For some reason I had remembered it as a spring missing from the *window* mechanism rather than the door. Stupid.

I've been able to source a used lock mechanism for £35 so I'll get that and install it.

From what I've read, the window, window regulator and all the lock stuff has to come out in order to swap the lock mechanism I think?

Passenger side handle is definitely broken - you can see the sheared off piece still attached to the rod in this photo below. Could've happened in transit or could've been me! Not expensive to replace.
