Diesels

Been driving a couple of diesels today. My daughter is changing her job and needs a good commuting car (155 mls a day!).

Anyway her husband has a Mazda 6 (2.2) and she likes those but has also got her eye on a Mitsubishi Lancer GS2 (2 ltr).

I drove both today and was very disappointed with the low-down power responsiveness. The Mazda was just about acceptable but the Lancer (2ltr VW) was really bad. I put my foot down a 1,500 and nothing happened - and I mean nothing! I know I have a 370Z but blimey her 1.4 Golf at least trys to accelerate.

So any suggestions for a responsive economical diesel for £6k?

Went out in my standard 240Z (sun shining) and it was much more responsive. The diesels were ok once the turbo 'spun up' but horrible below that.

Saab 93,55miles to the gallon at 85mph even more on a roads ,or im told the new fiesta 1200 petrol does 60mpg and goes like a rocket and no road tax

My manager at work has one of those new fiestas with an ecoboost engine, it's really quite impressive. Does about 43mpg realistically though, and he drives it like an old man... probably because he is one, and I hope he's not reading this :p

I have an a3 now with the 2.0tdi engine (more poke than the lancer one though I think?) but it's also gutless. My earlier 1.9tdi golf was far more responsive.

Only thing with the saab is its got italian in it,ie the engine,if i had known i wouldnt have touched it as they make **** cars, not like my proper saab 900turbo,but still worth a sniff

If its motorway miles then 2.5v6 Audi tdi a great engine.
But the faults on power band that you've found Rob on the others, would your daughter have picked up on that?
If not, surely just a nice economical car that she likes the look of is the way to go?

Rahail, ok will look at the Audi - I had an Audi 100 a few years ago and loved it.

You don't know my daughter re power. She is a petrolhead and I'm realising that more and more. She is the one who wants a responsive engine and has even been talking about getting a car 'remapped'. That's why I'm worried about the commute because she is a bit of a fast driver. The problem is I've always tried to prevent her from speed but not the lads and she reminds me of that re trackdays etc. I think it's a Dad-Daughter thing. She nearly went to Spa with me last year but it was too close to her wedding.

Rob i run 2 LPG vehicles one is a 2.3 transit factory install by neocam now thats not very economical 69 pence a litre £45 to fill and only 170 miles i'll let you do the maths

and the other a 1.4 berlingo aftrmarket conversion goes like a rocket only £27 to fill and 215 miles till empty

If you consider an lpg make sure there is an lpg station on her normal daily route not a 3 mile trip down the road
I have always been a diesel man myself but am now converted, the other 2 advantages are the heater comes through hot very quickly (unlike these very eficient engines that somtimes have a little diesel fired boiler to heat the water up) nice and quiet and no costly high pressure injector pumps or injectors that can be 1 to 2k to replace

I'm probably going to buy a Chrysler 300c estate at the moment. I've got the same budget and want a diesel estate (although my commute is about 40 miles round trip) 3 litre Mercedes Diesel engine and you'll pick one up for 6k.

Ok Rob, cardinal sin, i sort of stereo typed the female driver based on my sisters and nieces.
Sounds like your daughters very much like my wife, although she's calmed down since the two tiddlywinks are sat in the back most of the time.

I had a '55 A3 2.0 tdi sport 140 for a few years. Never really did it for me.
But frugal and decent looking in S line version.
Now I've got an Allroad ltd edition 2,5 tdi and its different class.
I'm sure economy wise its to be beaten by many, but for drive not many things for money can come close.
I remember it winning some class on fifth gear for best second hand car for the money.
Now in the Allroad guise its way too fuddy Duddy and uncool maybe for the younger generation, but any Audi with that 180bhp V6 engine i would hope will drive as well.

Avoid the SAAB like the plague, although my work horse is still going, I do around 4000 a week it has been the bane of my life! You name it, it's failed somewhere or somehow. Parts are getting more expensive by the week.
