Heard about this a few days ago. Have to agree with Duncan - in the minds of the Great Unwashed, this will not do our cars any good whatsoever - guilt by association with some ****** econo-boxes. Imagine a few years down the line, when people are seeing shitty cheap hatches with Datsun badges, the higher potential for sniggering when one says "I have a Datsun 240z"...

Thank God mine is a Nissan FairladyZ-L!!!
 
You want to associate your Nissan Fairlday with leaves, Micras and whatnots ?

IF they raise the Datsun name again - maybe they'll need 'us' to promote their cars as budget but long-lived cars - after all, that's what Datsuns (even Zs) were famous for !

I disagree...you seem to be of the opinion that everything that had a "Datsun" badge was an econo box = automatically shitty. There are some great cars that wore the badge with pride and carry huge respect, albeit not in the UK:rolleyes:...datsun 1600, datsun 160j SSS ...to name a few.

Sadly if you are worried about what the masses will think, then even a Nissan Fairlady Z -L is simply a "Datsun" to 99% of them:eek::D.

I wasn't referring to Datsun as it was (which I, as you, have total respect and belief in the greatness of) - I was referring to the potential for a renewed Datsun brand, if it is positioned at the bottom-end, to spawn new detrimental associations among the hoi polloi. Not that it would make me hide or stop me being proud if my car was a Datsun-branded Z. :cheers:

I dunno - maybe I'm being overly precious - I just personally would've preferred Nissan to pursue a different strategy if bringing the brand back - or not bothered at all.

Thanks Carlos G.! Unfortunately, he's on a mission from God that one so you and I will be branded heretics if we criticise :D.

The fact is that apparently it will happen but if Porschists survived front engined cars, 4x4s and 4 door saloons - so will we.;)

Well, Skoda's not really got the reputation it had in the 80's... Then again Lada sounds like a cheap brand...

Maybe they should hyphenate it for the "kidz ov 2day", Dat-Sun!
 
I wouldn't mind bringing a return to British Leyland though, I can picture a half-decent logo too

I do admit what I've seen of the rally team they kicked bottom somewhat
 
If I remember my history (from Top Gear) correctly BL was more a group of manufacturers (like GM) rather than a make in its own right (by the end anyway). I'd guess no-one bought it because BL didn't have anything to go with the name, like a car.

Now that BL doesn't exist (and thus has no owners) I can just create it from scratch for free :thumbs:
