Hey all

I finally started on my 260z, stripping the car completely and removing the tar that the PO put there.

I knew the car must have had a bump on the right hand side. And that there were some place with rust. I started removing the tar at the right side. You can easily spot the previous welds. These are substantial, so I think it must have had a collision at some point. However, after some extra digging. I did find something disturbing!

Looks to me like a dodgy repair. I haven´t spoken to my welder yet. Wanted to hear your advice. This part of the car is the worst. The rest seems relatively ok...Would you conitinue with this shell, or start looking for something else ?

Agreed. That looks like a really nice shell. The air tube is no big deal for a good welder.

thats rust free for most datsuns !!!!!!!!!!!!
yes easy fix and not seen when the wing is fitted

Maybe I am freaking out to much ! :D

I will get the car sandblasted ayway to reveal all points that need to be fixed.

One more thing I´d like you gurus to comment on is this:

I have noticed in the past that my cars nose on the right hand side was lower than the left.
If you see the pictures below you can spot that the right framerail goes down a bit towards the end. With the left framerail there is no problem.

Is this something I should concern myself about ?

he means have it repaird on a body repair jig, its a frame that measures all the maine points on the chassis and upper body points. cellete, global, and car bentch are the the best ones. i know because iv been doing it for 34 yrs.

Oh, OK ! Ill check where I can do this locally

try to find somone with a global jig, thats a universal bracket system. the other 2 are dedicated bracket jigs i.e you have to hire the brackets for the car you are repairing
and that can make the job more expensive the longer you need them.

Thx Rsdave

What would be a general cost to have the frame straightened ?

H3nrY I am sure someone may disagree but I wouldn't worry about that slight difference side to side if there actually is a difference.
Your car has obviously had some help with the welder but so what?? Are you building a bespoke no expense car???
From the pics the rail has been repaired and has a bow in it, the bow appears to be in front of the x-member mounting and wouldn't bother me a bit.
Check across the car with a level and see if the chassis rail is level at the top of the rail (not the bottom).

hey Throttleton

thx for the advice. Yes the frame itself seems straight, only that bow at the end. I see some dips of the rail below, Im guessing thats because of potholes.

What do you mean ?" Check across the car with a level and see if the chassis rail is level at the top of the rail (not the bottom)."

the chassis rail, meaning where the engine sits ?

'That's because of potholes'
That's a good guess but not what I meant.:)
I think you have had some chassis rail repairs done in the past, amongst others.
If the repairs are structurally sound and you have a wobble in the rail from a cosmetic point of view then all will be fine.
If the top of the repaired chassis rail where the front x member bolts to is straight then the forward part of the chassis rail has little impact on the car from what I can gather .
The measurement (level) across the rails is just to see if the repairs are correct.

If it means anything to any one watching, all the measurements we all rely on from Nissan
are plus or minus a lot and have been measured from multiple so called 'straight' cars!!

Ah now I see.

In essence, if this :

is pretty much straight on both sides, it "should" be fine.
I will reinforce the rail where the crossmember bolts on to also.

H3nrY.
It is time to take the bull by the horns................
Your car has the the usual Z problems , but your car is better than most...
Fix what you have, I don't believe you have major problems. Fix it and be happy!!
