80's Roadsports

"It will be for road-legal production sports cars produced and registered in the 1980s," ...... Any cars with turbos would not be eligible." .

Doesn't say 'NA' - says no turbos !:p

Here we go :

I don't agree with the HSCC as including the following cars as sportscars in the '70s series :

Alfa GT Juniors and GTVs

Chevrolet Camaro

Dodge Charger

Ford Mustang

Ferrari 400GT

Lancia Fulvia S2/S3 s

Pontiac Firebird

and the lonesome Ford Escort RS2000

These are not sports but saloon coupés ! Not even the 'Vette is included ?

And is 4WD allowed ?

But anyway, if these are all included as you think Celicas should be (again - sportscars ?) then that opens up all sorts of :

Alf Romeo SZ
Alfa GTV 3 litre

BMW E30 M3

Honda Civic CRX

Lancia Gamma Coupe

Lotus Esprit

Porsche 944 S2
Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera and Carrera Club Sport

Vauxhall Calibra
Posche 964

I've run out of time (said Cathy) !

I think the HSCC 70's Roadsports is flawed to a degree too. My main issue is the weight of cars based on production models, whereas weight per class as based on engine size would make things more competitive.

Not in the press release, but I'm sure even they are not daft enough to leave it out of the rules.

Sports Cars ? Define it........maybe sports cars and sports coupe's....it's a tricky one.

and the lonesome Ford Escort RS2000

Think he runs as class F invitation.

And is 4WD allowed ?

Don't know, but you mention Porsche 964 which was first released in 1989 but only in C4 form - C2 came the following year.

Alf Romeo SZ
Alfa GTV 3 litre

Yes

BMW E30 M3

Homologated versions not allowed

Honda Civic CRX

Yes................I suppose (front wheel drive)

Lancia Gamma Coupe

I guess so, weird looking thing though

Lotus Esprit

S3 to 1987 yes, but the Peter Stevens redesign of 1988 only came in turbo form (I think....correct me if I'm wrong).

Porsche 944 S2
Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera and Carrera Club Sport

Yep 944 S2 would be my choice if I had the time / money

911 Club Sport they would exclude as a lightweight special.

Vauxhall Calibra

:D...and you hang a question mark over Celica's !!!!

I'm sorry - you know I like Celicas but they aint sports cars and niether are Camaros and Mustangs ('vettes and Fieros are) ! Ok, Calibras are not to impressive but do look out for the turbo 4wd version (what it should have been) !

But, define what IS a sportscar ?

Two doors ?
Two seats ?
Open topped ?

???

Harsher ride, alledged better handling for the era of car.higher engine performance and better brakes..........? oh and a stripe down the side ;)

I know that Rob but until they say N/A only, a supercharger is NOT a turbocharger - yes ?

Lancia Thema 8.3

If you insist, but if you actually read the 70's rules and apply them to the 80's you'll find -

5.7.4 Induction Systems
All induction Systems must be the original standard fitment.
No forced induction is permitted.

It also states -

Other cars may be eligible subject to proof of series production in period as a GT or sports car. Excluded from this
Championship are all light weight, high performance or competition versions, together with any one-off specials.

That would probably exclude any saloon based coupe's (ie BMW 3 series etc)

They also don't allow 'vettes in and if that isn't classed as a sportscar..... !

I wouldn't cry over M3s but not to allow a Lotus Carlton in - that's sacriledge  !

Nice one Centurion :

850i
This was the first model launched in 1989 with the 5 liter M70B50 engine producing 300 bhp (224 kW/304 PS). It was available with either a 4-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Mercedes 500SL ?

Yeah, thought about the Merc - but try finding one with a manual box.

The early Porsche 928 version does well in the 70's series and the model runs right through into the 90's.
A 1989 928 S4 GT would be some serious bit of kit.

Weight ?

Corvette C4 (maybe even a ZR-1) ?

Well, if you're gonna eat spagetti....The Lamborghini Countach LP500 Quattrovalvole.

"On the 1985 Geneva Auto Show, Lamborghini unveiled their answer, the Super-Countach, the QuattroValvole, with its 455 Bhp, it made the TestaRossa eat dust.......the latest Countach, the 25th Anniversary, used the same engine, but the bodywork was much less aggressive-looking, so if you want to buy a Countach, buy a QV."

errr....

So for an era of hot hatches, we've managed to pull together a fairly varied line-up.

Lambo.......can you imagine it !!!

I was working often the streets of London in the '80s (don't ask) !

Sure I saw Testa Rossas, Lambos and 911s but more often than not - 3 series convertibles and 'hot hatches'.....that's what I remember !

I did buy my 1st Celica in 1986, sold to get my 1st 240 in '89 and was driving a 200SX in 1990.

Bastards HSCC for not allowing the 200SX !

I was chatting to Matt today, we thought it would be better if 80's Roadsport wasn't restricted to Sports & GT cars - so saloons etc...

That way it would make the pack bigger and more entertaining.

Come to think of it, they should do that for the 70's too.
