280Z prices on the up !

Favorite 280 Zed is the Black Pearl.

I say what I mean and I mean what I say....tints, shades or mixes weren't mentioned - just 'yellow'.:D No hard feelings - I'm changing the colour anyway ;)

Yep - another one - Black Pearl : no point looking for a premium for it over here !
 
I quite like the zap's. Also like the primrose yellow type colour.

I don't think the 280z's prices will rise much although they are becoming more popular. I'll let everyone know what I think of them after I've lived with mine for a few months. I think it will always be a cheap alternative to a 240 that you will change to make it look more like one. Never a car you will want as a 280z.

2 seater or 2+2, the 280Z is the best S30 for the road, an everyday car - lowered a tad, swap the bumpers, decent wheels - job done and basically standard !

I'd have one alongside my 240Z for road trips....!

The main objection to the 280Z is the ridiculous federal park bench bumpers that just have to go.

Once those are replaced with 240Z style bumpers you have a nice drivers car, last of the line, slightly more refined than earlier cars that the man in the street cannot tell apart from a 240Z or 260Z and a lot of spare cash in your wallet as a 280Z will be about 2/3 of the price of any 240Z like for like ( silly priced ZAP excluded ).
 
Refined ? Hell yes, with factoryaircon, electronic ignition, an L28 and later a 5spd box, first as an option then OEM !

My view ?

The 240Z prompted Porsche to bring out something better....and then Nissan upped the stakes again to at least meet it with the 280Z and sold +250,000 of them !

Nissan got it right !

I disagree mate - and I'm looking from the sales point of view....and ultimately, car manufacturers exist to sell cars.

If we begin with the C series 911, introduced in August 1969 (just before the 240 and one might expect Nissan to have aimed at that market) with 2.0 and 2.2 litre engines with power ratings of between 125 - 155bhp.

The D series was sold from mid 1971 with the "2.4" engine, (2.341 in fact) with 130-140bhp.

The 911 2.7 sold from mid 1973 had 150bhp (S-version excluded), replaced in the USA by the 912E and the year following by the 924 - both models using the VW 2.0.

From 1964 'til end 1973, there were a total of 88,000 911s sold worldwide.....Nissan sold 156,000 240Zs and throw in the Roadsters too.....:cheers:
 
I'm looking at driving,sales don't interest me,I never made anything out of it,I also thinking of an rs 2000 custom ,even looking at another Zed if a decent one comes up for sale,all theses lhd are just pushing prices up of RHD Zeds ,but still seeing a lot of em for sale after many months ,the 280z is a totally different car to drive than a 240 or 260 and better,if anyone has driven a good one then they will know wot I mean

Not comparing like v like though as stratospheric difference in cost when new. 911 cost twice as much as 240Z so in 1971 you could get a new 240Z for $3500 whereas 911 T/E/S ranged from $6500 to $9500.

Datsun quoted power ratings using SAE whereas Porsche quoted DIN so the quoted rating of 240Z at 150bhp SAE is actually nearer 143bhp DIN

Compare on bird pulling capacity. We are back in the 70s so un-pc allowed :D

Transport ourselves back in time to the early 70s, we are in CA as it's a more romantic setting for the story ;) long hair, best flares on, nice whiff of Denim or Brut aftershave ( not too strong mind ) and we have a hot date, keen to impress the young lady of our dreams.

Is her knicker elastic going to snap quicker at 10 paces with the 240Z or the 911 ;) ?

I know which I'm taking along. It even has a small back seat for when the action gets a bit hotter. An extra bonus when patter of little feet arrives a few years later the Mrs. may let you keep it for a while longer whilst the 240Z will be going straight back to Hank's Car Sales in exchange for a nice family sedan.

Not exactly sure on power ratings - there is gross SAE and nett SAE just to confuse issue even more, maybe one of the more technical bods on here can enlighten. If it is 129bhp DIN then that is less than 130bhp of the puniest 911T so you've lost there too :p

Getting back on track of the original thread about 280Zs the later modelswere rated at 170bhp SAE so although laden with emission **** still the most powerful of all the factory S30s made for US market.

And available in 2+2 form from 1974 onwards with no engine in the back to restrict fluid movements !

What changes from original spec. has Marc done ?
Chrome bumpers sourced from ?

I have a couple of 280Z arriving very soon and debating whether to go chrome or FRP.
One is silver so black FRP from Craig will look OK but other is wine red metallic.
May look better in chrome on that car.
Have used Futofab in States for chrome bumpers previously but expensive landed especially now with exchange rate at $1.30.
