No, not connected other than our common interest and I'm sure members in common. We sometimes share a stand at a show or two.
A long time ago, I think one split from the other, but that's ancient history.

In the past it’s the register that has a stand and invites z club members

As far as I can remember cos I’m an old git now certain members of the Z club didn’t want nout to do with 280zx s hence the start of the register which is called the Classic Z register but doesn’t recognise 280zx.300 zx ect as it has an X after the Z and intention was just to recognise 240z and 260 z as they are classed more as classic cars ( where do you draw the line on that one ) but the register contradicts itself in some ways by having 350 Z s as it hasn’t an X after the Z,most of wot I’ve put is true as that’s wot Mr F told me so there might be a bit of deviation there somewhere along with wot I put but in the past you wouldn’t be welcome on their stand if you had a 280 zx but we are all mates and as I sed, more Zeds the better

Does anyone ever remember that small time period that there was a (classic?) Zx register? basically to appease all the zx owners who used to attend the register events but used to get 'comments' on the worthiness of their cars for the stands.
In my old man's circle of zed guys they all were 'z club' members and became subsequent 'register' members too.

Believe there was an issue with a few people having an issue with the Z Club parts dept that was growing to a size where it had to be VAT registered and and a couple suggested that the dept should stop selling parts once the yearly Vat theshold was reached and the vast majority disagreed with this suggestion at a EGM and the register was formed six months later with the backing of a couple of an old time Z specialist who maybe thought the parts dept was effecting his trade
But hey all in the long distant past and each went its own way and now all the players from back then have moved on and all is good now

As the above suggests, there was a split in the late-80s, with various elements contributing to it, such as the issue over the parts department (which became MJP Eastern Auto under Mike Feeney) and a divergence of opinion over what vehicles should be allowed in the club. The original group that broke away to form the Register believed that the club should be for 240Z and 260Z, with the view to elevating their status as a classic car. They did not view the 280ZX and subsequent 300ZX as part of that lineage; there was also, I recall hearing, a disdain for the modding culture and involvement in things like drag racing from that clique. The Register was thus formed as a classic car club, whereas the Z Club emphasized the "one club, all the cars" mantra. All that is ancient history though, with most key players now not involved. Both clubs share members, share stands at things like Silverstone Classic and the Donington Historic, etc. The Z Club remained the bigger club, having probably a wider appeal and this forum to drive it.

Ironically, the Z Club has, naturally over time, become more focussed on the classic Zs, 240Z through to 280ZX. The 300ZX contingent has fallen away, given the existence of 300zx.co.uk, there are 350Z clubs, etc. So it's still "one club, all the cars" conceptually, but the club community has become organically oriented around the S30 and S130s. Which I think is fine personally - it's just happened through natural evolution and the concentrated knowledge base and like-mindedness that brings people to the club as it exists rather than any deliberate exclusion.
