Interim Brake Upgrade - S13WB Calipers - Some advice please

Hello All,

I've been a member on the forum from a while now but have never posted as I've been using all your handy advice whilst looking for a Z. Finally purchased a '78 280Z that was imported from the states a couple of years ago.
It is ridiculously fast as it's had a conversion, however it still has it's original front brake setup which makes it quite under braked at the moment.

I am looking to do an interim brake upgrade (please read this as economical!) whilst deciding on a final wheel size decision which will in turn point me in the direction of the big brake kit that I want to go for in the end.

Was planning to use S13WB calipers as they are bolt-on however I am unsure of which disc to use.
Some have mentioned Peugeot 505 GTI (but I think these need to be machined because of PCD differences) and others have mentioned Nissan Z32 (no mods needed). I would prefer Z32 as they fit and are vented and wondered if anyone would be kind enough to provide details of the disc or maybe part numbers? And of course if there is anything else need for the upgrade? Also what brake pads would I use for fast street / performance?

Appreciate any advice you could give.

Many thanks!

Lionel

I would do the sums before you spend the wonga as the interim solution may not be that much cheaper...

The Hilux calipers and Z31 disc set up will cost you anything from £300-450. The main advantage is that it fits under 14" wheels

Contrast this to the Z32/R32 caliper and bracket with Honda/R32 discs which I suspect would be in the £500-700 range.

The latter fits under 15" and good enough to stop the seriously quick cars..

I would recommend fitting racing brake pads first (stock caliper). It makes an incredible difference and should be more than enough for fast road and track day driving.

Pagid RSL29, Project mu, Ferrodo. Just to name a few.

Thank you @240L31 for the advice however the car is running a supercharged 6.0L V8 supercharged lump making circa 550 rwhp. .. stock brakes its just not an option unfortunately

So they didn't uprated the brakes when they did the engine swap? Jeez!
How about the suspension?

Hi @datsfun thanks for the info. Haven't come across the zr32 disc Honda disc combo. I looked at the 300mm floating disc from technotoytuning but its expensive. I'm running g

Nope... sadly... have to pump the brakes and stand on the paddle to get a decent reaction. Just not response enough...

The suspension on the other hand is ace.
Eibach springs
Tokico shock
Larger sway bars
T3 tension control arms
Poly bushes and new tie rod ends

With 550bhp upfront, I woukd skip the interim solution. Drop Gary ( atomman on here) a PM- his offering of the R32/Z32 caliper and 296mm discs should work a treat and will not break the bank either !

Good decision. Did I mention I'm really happy with mine? [emoji3]

No didn't realise you were running these too. Glad you are happy with them :)
What discs did you go for in the end?
Anything I should be aware of when doing the install?

I have Jag S type 300mm discs, because its the right height for 260 hubs. wouldn't work on a 240.

Brill, I am doing the same as its a 280z, so yours must be a late 260, as some if the early 260's had the same setup at the 240's.

oh yes, of course you have a 280. Mine's August '74, I think only the really early ones had the weedy 240 hubs.

@jonbills I'm almost ready to start installing the front GTR Calipers, carriers and new discs (found out all the brake lines are corroded and need replacement from the master cylinder back to each wheel! So working on this first).
Do I need to do anything with the Servo and/or Master Cylinder if I am to retain the drum brakes for the moment?
