Skiddell/Pmac Airbox

...do we think it’s possible to produce these with a shiny outer? I personally prefer the more classic car smooth looks than faux carbon fibre.

And the original shade of orange? Or that light blue for that matter, whichever is correct?

Strangely, I like it black to copy the colours of the original UK 260z box (he awaits to be corrected)! Well it would look beat in mine anyway ;)

I will get some prices on producing a batch of these air boxes and passing them on through the zclub. They would be paid for by the zclub and sold to zclub members at cost price. No markup or profit.

With regard to the actual parts produced. It would be nice if we could all pick a preferred colour or chose either smooth inner for performance/ smooth outer for looks but that’s just not going to happen with a batch price. They will all come with a smooth inner for performance but you are all welcome to fill and paint the outside whatever colour you like.

I’ll get the ball rolling and get a firm price then see where we go from there. I must stress that this will be a non profit zclub venture for the benefit of the members and will involve members giving up there time for free. These should not be resold for profit because that would not be in the spirit of the idea.

Well just in case there’s enough interest to get a batch of one colour, I’d choose smooth factory orange.

If u want them coloured surely you just paint it?
If we’re getting into smooth finish coloured gel coating the outside you’ll need a new mold as I reckon they’re laid up around a male mold to create a smooth inner, thats why the outer is rough.

Continuing from the original post I’ve written to efihardware to see what sort of discount may be avail, appreciate they will be more expensive, but they look very well finished. I suspect they’re plastic hence the smooth finish.

I think from what steve says we need to get permission first? Well done on looking into it.

has the club Committee decided that’s what they’d like to do? It’s a great idea, one that must have come from a handsome and modest man.

I don’t think smooth on the inside provides any technical plus points, on the race bikes and cars I’ve had, they’ve never been smooth, I think Andy above is correct.

Have you a pic of the mold?

We believe the moulds were gifted to the club in Mike's will, so the committee is supporting @johnymd in the actions he described above. If all goes well, the club will commission a run of airboxes and sell to members at cost.

I would stress that has to be paid members of the Zclub in order to maintain our pain free status with HMRC.

Thankyou modest and handsome man.

Personally, I’d keep it simple and deliver them as per the previous versions - in black with smooth inner gel coat. If people want colours, then they can spray them. Faffing about with different colours or talking about smooth outer finishes is just going to unnecessarily complicate things and muddy the water.

And if I remember rightly, the smooth inner IS significant to the performance - otherwise Steve wouldn’t have designed like that.

I agree about the colours etc. I'd like to see some data on the 'smooth' aspect, I've seen formula 1 cars/motogp bikes/WEC cars, none had smooth internals on the airboxes. maybe in the same way you don't polish intake ports?

That's to do with the fuel/air mix separating I think, the air box is pre this so it's probably more to do with a smooth airflow?

in ports you try to create a swirl/vortex/mix.

I'd like to see something on smooth internals though, i've not seen it on the world beating stuff I've seen.

Given that eligible buyers ( paid members of the Zclub) will benefit from Mike's generosity , how about requesting them to make a small donation to Mike's chosen charity upon purchase of the item as a thank you ?

A donation is a fine idea.

Regarding the finish, I think there might be many ideas and wills here. Why not supply them unpainted and let the buyers paint them. I'm all up for making it easy so it it can be done. I'm all with Richie here

I’ll post this here just for info, but also put it on on the original airbox post..... Just had this picture from efihardware which looks really neat and confirmation they can do 10%. This is their deeper box which they say fits 240/260z7445657F-AD5F-407E-9D17-E95E9714A3CD.jpeg

When some of you fit these boxes make sure there is enough room between the box and battery as if you’ve got the deeper manifold you might struggle to get it on,ive got the much shallower manifold and even with this I have to take the box off to get the battery out,I’m running Jenvies so not sure on depth compared with carbs.
Just saying
