Hitachi v "Original" SUs

Hi All,

I wondered if anyone with an L28 engine has swapped from Hitachi carbs to SU HS6 for the better / easier parts supply?

If so, was there any noticeable drop off in performance?

Le Mans is getting close and I fear my chances of having my existing Hitachis reconditioned in the next few weeks is pretty remote but I could buy some SUs.

Cheers,

Nick D.

Nick,

Not a cheap option but speak with Ztherapy, they may be able to hit your timescales.

Their product TRANSFORMED my car and they set up the right needles in them for your engine / cam etc - super friendly and helpful.

Wow! Sorry to hear that! At least if you go 2" SUs and change your mind they won't break the bank and there is a good secondhand market for them. I know people have put them on Zs to great effect.

Can't imagine why you would drop power if set up right, but then again, I'll leave that to the experts to comment on.

Good luck buddy!

Ps. There is this of course :evil grin:

That exact ebay auction is in my watched, not because I am looking to buy them, or could afford them, but they are so damn nice to look at!

In spite of their sexiness Sean, did you find any performance benefits/issues over hitachi ones?

They give a broader power/torque range. The L28 on the orange Z in the photos was doing 30 mpg for 202bhp and that included motorway speeds of +85mph.

Correction - EFi is sexiest - carbs are now for old gaffers.:p

It's all about electronic $ex with you Sean!! Have to beg to differ, digital may well be accurate and reliable but analogue will always have more soul / art about it!!

On a more serious note, interesting what you say about 2" SUs. I had "heard" that before but no personal experience of it.

Triples is all about showing off a bigger sinep than SUs which can easily deliver all the road power needed. EFi is knowing that one's sinep is bigger but keeping it zipped up discreetly.

Drive both before staking your soul on the argument.;)

Cheers All,

I do like the look / sound of those 2 inch SUs. Need to check what else I would have to change though to run them, starting with air filters.

I used 2" SUs and they are a simple swap but your inlet manifold might need opening-up to match the bigger carbs. I used air-filter socks on the 'trumpets' not the best solution but it worked fine until the foam dried out and crumbled.

Thanks Rob,

Seems like 2" carbs and spares are more difficult to get hold of than the HS6 version and as I'm not doing track days etc, it seems going down the HS6 route with appropriate jets and K&N filters may be the way to go.

Cheers,
