Participants of the 2009 Monte Carlo Historic are known. Seven Datsun’s take part in his event. This is one more as in 2008. And this time not only Norwegian or Fins but a Spanish and a Japanese entrance!!!! That I have to see……………..

Philippe who al ways started in Reims is going to warmer countries. Can’t blame him.

.........23 for the Japanese entree :D

Don't build your hopes up too much Guus. I've been in contact with the entrant ( he was asking about studded tyres ) and it seems to me that his LHD "240Z" is likely built up from a north American market '280Z' bodyshell, with cosmetic modifications to make it look like a "240Z", or is actually an RLS30 with an HLS30 chassis number grafted onto it.

Top marks to him for bringing a car all the way over from Japan for the event, but the car and it's details are not quite was I was expecting / hoping............. I wonder what the scrutineers are going to make of it, presuming they know what they are looking at?

Alan hopes for what, a number 1 finish? nee…. Then I have more hopes for Svein with a 7th and a 9th place over the last two years. He is more experienced in snow driving as Toshimassa, I think.

It always gives me joy to see many Z’s at the start. And what you said; all credits to the men bringing their car over from Japan!!!
He’s overjoyed that he got his favourite number…. 23. Which actually had to be no5 to a bit more historical. Oh no that’s my number….leave it :D
There’s a good chance I’ll be down there in Reims to give ‘live’ report. And for the French scrutineers I think there’s no fear………

He is now using studded Yokohama Ice Guard’s, is that what you advised??

Car pics on my website….

No, I'm not really all that bothered about the results of what are essentially 'Regularity' events nowadays. I just hope that everyone has a good time, a safe time, and that the 'show' will look good.

But what I expect is that the cars taking part in an event "Historique" actually bear close similarity in specs and details to those which originally competed - with obvious concessions to safety / fire equipment etc, and availability of tyres. So when I see what is obviously not a "240Z" body - built some years after '240Z' production had finished, but wearing '240Z'-style trim parts and an Export '240Z' engine bay ID tag that cannot possibly match up with it's original firewall-stamped chassis number - it makes me sad.

If the driver / navigator / scrutineers and other competitors accept this I suppose everything will be hunky dory, but to my mind it makes the whole exercise a completely pointless charade.

First of all, Ikeuchi san was asking about legality ( esp. DOT and 'E' markings ) of some particular studded Bridgestones, and some studded Pirellis. I advised him that some other competitors were using Vredesteins, and that these were legal. There was some confusion about whether he would be required to use a 'control' tyre, but I see from your post that he ended up with Yokohamas.

I hope he takes more than the total of 5 tyres that he originally planned to take......

Build-up photos of Ikeuchi san's car. Check - in particular - the distinctly non-"240Z" radiator support panel and crossmember, and the rear valance........

Did you confront him with your arguments? He hasn’t got a 240Z……….
If not, why not? If yes, what was his argument?

Can you still show yourself again in Japan? Or do you have to cut the tip of your little finger in front of him?

LOL. Yes, of course! Out of curiosity if nothing else.....

I pointed out - very politely I think - that the 'shell in his pictures didn't look like a "240Z" 'shell at all, and appeared to be a north American market '260Z' or '280Z'. I asked him how he was going to get it past the scrutes.........

Well, he said that he had been "assured" that it was a "240Z" ( :smash: ). Presumably by the gentleman who sold it to him....... :)

Then he sent me a photo of the engine-bay tag. To save his blushes I won't post it here, but suffice to say that it's a very spiffy '240Z' tag - with L24 engine number - that could not have belonged to the 'shell in the photos. Of course, the S30-series '280Z' model's chassis numbers started with 'HLS30' just like the LHD Export market '240Z' models, so there's the possibility for a little bit of confusion there.......

Hard to say whether he's the victim in all this, but I'd have expected somebody else to have pointed all this out to him before the car got finished? Who knows? Things like this seem to be quite unimportant to some people, so maybe it's me that's the odd one out?

He's stopped e-mailing me now, so I'm probably persona non grata. If I see him in Japan I'll ask him what the full story is though. Perhaps I'll wear chain-mail gloves.

Guus, if you make it down to the event you will of course be giving him the full KGB treatment, won't you?

:D

I understand the concern but in this type of rally I'd rather see a 'not quite correct' 240Z than yet more Escorts and 911s, many of which may be 'suspect' also.

the norwegian rally cars

hi.
iam very proud to say that we jancarfactory.com have made 3 monte carlo datsun 240z.
And i would put my bet on Svein Lund, he really do know how to drive and he have done some upgrades to the car now.
iam in prosess to make another rally or race car, it in sweden now at rallypro who made a rollcage for it.

Hello Jan,

Nice to see you here too. Yes Svein could be one of the better ones!!! Last year 9th and that was only because of last stages. With even a win in the last stage!! So if he is a bit more consistent it will workout…
Seeing your photos, you are quite a busy man.
Norway is far away from your place, where did you met Svein?

hi Gus.
well iam norwegian to:)
And I have been messing around with Datsuns for 25 years.....
we made one rally car for Aril Amundsen, and Svein was so impressed with that old datsun who just went and went...His Escort BDA did break down on the way to Monte Carlo.
So he did called me and asked if I could make him a Datsun.

happy new year

is there any one who have some good fotos of the datsun from 2008? any link you could guide me to?

Until Monday morning, the message was car 23 has to do without studded tyres. They simple didn’t arrive. Had arrived a week ago!!!!! Will inform you Saturday evening when I return from Reims.

Wow, what a mess, and what a waste. I offered to help him source suitable ( legal! ) studded tyres for the event months and months ago!

He seems to have chosen some bad advisors. How frustrating  :(
