These photos are from early 1971, but where was it?
It wasn’t the RAC but probably some kind of airfield race/rally??

John Bloxham and Andy Cowan are fighting it out.

Guus,
That's the Cadwell Park round of the 1971 Castrol Rallycross Championship. John Bloxham was driving car no.55 ( TKS 33 SA 694 ).

The colour photo was taken by photographer Dave Grey, and I believe the black and white photo was taken by Colin Taylor.

I am stunned at you knowing all of that. Top effort!

According my scrap book :)eek::confused:) he ended 14th??

At first I thought 'The Count' was just a rude guy who poked holes in peep's threads but nope... He just happens to know it all, straight up. Guus is another one. Damned font of Z knowledge. It's fab that they use the site so that us guys who are fans of the marque can sit back and watch questions we may have about the history and integrity of the ole' Fairlady simply answered in the finest of detail. Priceless.

Ok folks here for your delectation is the CCC article the colour Pic came from. The black and white image doesn't appear in CCC so may be from Autosport or Motoring News (haven't got a complete set for 71 unfortunately) Enjoy

Not suprised he finished 14th against the likes of a 252 bhp V8 in a Mini !

Great stuff digging that out and knowing it.

How awesome is that photography? All of those photos make you feel like you are there. Incredible. Proper photography is a dying art. Love it.

Actually, looking into this a bit closer, I believe 1971 is incorrect.

John Bloxham 'borrowed' '694' just after the 1970 RAC Rally, and took it up to Cadwell in late November 1970 - but the CCC magazine feature of course was published in 1971, hence the confusion?

I believe he came at least second in one of his heats, but a low overall position would not be that surprising really if you consider that the car was not really set up ( or indeed untimately all that suitable ) for pure Rallycross events. The more nimble Escorts and Minis, and the Alpine with its better traction, would have had an advantage over the early works 240Z - which was built primarily with endurance events such as the EA Safari in mind at that point.

Here's a different photo from the same event:

Can still do that of course. Just waiting for the next available opportunity....... :)

"'The Count" is - of course - simply a spelling mistake.

That might explain why I couldn't find the other pic

Have to have a look at late 70 Autosport-was Cadwell before or after RAC? I have references to rally reports in Autosport for 3/12/70 and 10/12/70

On a similar note have just found a copy of a letter from Bradboune Brothers to Lynne Godber re Big Sam and the Rally cars dated 29/3/83 re-printed in an old mag.
Does The Count have a copy? and if not would you like one.-PM e-mail address if you do

Just found the date in one my “Autosport’s 26 november 1970”
In the dairy under britisch club events page 5.

RAC rally 1970

Did anybody know Shekhar Mehta wasn’t on the list, in first place until he has got John Jago’s number 66. Jago’s car was not ready.
I wonder who his co-driver was.
He DNF with his 1600SSS at SS10 because of piston problems.

mysterious EAS Datsun 240Z

I found a photo of a mysterious EAS Datsun 240Z with start number 15; I think it is a ‘local’. The car has a Z instead of a J on the back. In addition, the licences plate has bigger numbers as normal. It’s a shot from the back, if you closely you barely can see a double 33 on the plate…………..?
Question is: who is the driver and co-driver, which year and what happend to him?
It ain't '73 because that number was taken.

Accordingly, I also have a photo of a ’72 EAS tender/spare/recce car plate number 4541, driven by Aaltonen / Fall. Another number add to the list.

Thanks for the offer, but I already have copies of several original letters from Bradburn's on the subject of Big Sam and the ex-Works rally cars and this will be one of them.

Isn't that from '74? No.14 was Kallstrom's car ( 6468 ) and no.35 was Remtulla ( 6469 ). I thought no.15 was a service / tender car left over in Kenya from the previous year, locally registered ( just like one of Mehta's cars that he later brought to the UK was ) and 'local' ( Zambian? ) drivers. What about Skowronnek and Woodlands?

There were ex-works cars - with local entries - running in the EA Safari as late as 1977........

4541 was one of that big batch ( eight Works cars ) sent out to Kenya for the '72 Safari. Later in the year Shekhar Mehta used it for the RAC Rally.........
