Samuri conversion

A friend of mine, Ted who lives in Benfleet, has done the machining work on the bell housings for this conversion for a few people. Maybe even some of yours Pete. I'll ask when I bump into him next if he still has the details of what has to be done. I could then put people in touch if they just want the machining done as no one is doing this anymore.

I have mine done in the East Midlands John.
FYI The information on machining is available on the internet.

Sean - sent you a message about your gearbox. Please check for it. Hope it gets through as in poor signal area and on my phone!

Just a word of warning about the S14a conversion. The bellhouseing may need another threaded hole for the reverse switch to work so mention that to whoever does the work. Expensive to have to strip the whole lot down to do it after. This has been overlooked on quite a few of these conversions that I know of so beware.

I'm trying to understand this John because I didn't have a problem. The bellhousing is the Datsun part that you keep so why is another threaded hole needed if it already has one for the reverse switch?

There are at least 3 different bell housings, 2 have different positions for the reverse detent rod switch, one works with the S14 (the later 280Z one) the other (the earlier 240/260) doesnt.....its as simple as that .....been there done that.
It can be overcome by welding and drilling a boss, buts its an extra faff.

Then theres the different speedo drives, ones an aluminium body the others steel, one has a slightly greater "cam" offset than the other so engages better with the worn drive.

I guess nearly 20 conversions lets you aquire a great deal of data that others may not see or will overlook.

The info is out on the net but quite a few of the of the writeups dont mention what Steve has said above. which is why I pointed it out.

Basically, they all have the reverse switch and of the same type but only the later and s series have it in exactly the same place. The options are: re-drill and tap the bell howseing for the new location, machine a new indent in the shaft, or put a switch on your dash for the reverse light as some have done. The speedo drive is a simple fix and just requires rotating untill the teeth mess nicely(not too tight) and then cut a slot for the retainer to hold it in possition.

I must add that I have never done this conversion so dont have first hand experience like Steve but I do like to fully research things in order to sift out the **** on the internet.

Only done the one but it went ok and is still in the car now.

John - good heads up.

Much of the confusion is the result of people insisting on identifying gearboxes by using model series names and numbers ('Silvia', 'S14', '280ZX' etc), engine types and even woolier terms ('240Z gearbox').

All these gearboxes were given names and numbers by the factory. If people could get their heads around the idea of using them it would be a lot better for all....

Fair point Alan

Just give me a mo to sift out the numbers and I will post up the correct identification

A little help here Alan please

Certainly the gearbox used in the S14 and the S14a were the FSW71C but there were differeneces between the two (oil trap doors etc)

The gearboxes used in S30's ranged from 71A through to 71B but these appeared to be more "families" of boxes rather than a specific units .......there were a number of variants that need identifying

Can you shed any light on how we can be more specific
