Ben

Can't wait to hear your first impressions of the Pilbeam. Can I be cheeky and suggest you try a few sprints as well, I always found them good to practice your high speed steering with a bit more room to play should things get exciting :)

Hi mike I was hoping to get some sprints in. Really looking forward to having the first drive in the beast. Doing thinks in reverse to you I think.

Ben, you're just mid cycle :) I started with a Fiat Twin Cam engined MG Midget I bought for £250, then a FF1600 before hitting success with the Turner Modsports and then getting into the Libre stuff. You'll catch me up when you finally ditch slicks :)

But single seaters are hard to get out of your system once you've tried them.......... They're just such a joy to drive. Would love to have one again, now where's that Lotto ticket ??

Enjoy

Yes I know they look like they are going wrong way but the silencers have to go in the sidepods and then turn through 180 degrees and exit at the rear again.

Genuine factory big bore block.

I thought that there were questions over the authenticity of any Factory "works" L series blocks in the UK, I recall a post by Albrecht some time ago that there was no evidence to support it.......I'll try and find the post ....apologies if I am wrong

Steve this block was one of 3 that Han tjan acquired from Nissan for Jan odor to build the race motor.
It bears a resemblance to an L series block until you look inside.measuring the wall thickness against any L28 block also shows this is not a block off the production line.
All for info not argument.

Good to see you are still alive and kicking buddy. No pressure but I have now stored the Z until you complete your side of a challenge with Dee!!,!!!:smash::bow::driving:

Not looking for an argument either....surely all blocks were off the production line ? I'm not counting mine as anything super special, certainly has no race history but it too has much thicker walls - some JDM saloon block ?

Where is your dip-stick located.....(he asks expecting some 'stick' for that)....?

Dip stick is in the dry sump tank in the boot

You might have some wires crossed there? There are at least six genuine ( ex ) Works L-series six blocks in the UK to my knowledge. All of them were originally fitted to Works rally cars ( one of them still is.... ).

But Ben's block is not a 'Works' block in that sense; Ben's block is an equally rare factory 'Sports Option' / Race Option cylinder block - an un-numbered, specially-cast high strength block with extra thickness in the cylinder walls. Janspeed would have performed their own work on it, and it's an important part of the car's heritage and history.

Like the new toy Ben -should certainly concentrate the mind a bit :D

A friend of mine has a Rover powered single seater an SRG1A which he built from scratch. He has just started bringing it back out again after a few years lay off, and after a puncture decided to price up a new set of slicks :(

Like the 500 as well. We used to get 4 or 5 out quite often at sprints. I still remember having to push them backwards to get neutral after they stalled on the line :) Oh and the orange sticker to say they were running Methanol.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha you could not come up with a price to buy that engine. Genuine factory big bore block. All my work. Slide throttle that janspeed ran on this engine in the 70s.

Dream on my friend but I appreciate the interest.
Skiddy I have looked and read and re read and then looked again then used the search function but am unable to find the word "WORKS" used in the description of the block.

Going in a straight line for soooo long may have done some damage to your eyesight and left you seeing things that are not there.

Still love you lots though buddy

As I said apologies if I am wrong and I clearly was....(there’s always a first:rolleyes:)

Alan thanks for that, as an engine enthusiast the block, head etc are of great interest to me both historically and technically.
For some weird reason I was under the impression that there were no "works" blocks confirmed in the UK I now stand corrected

What is of equal importance (and new to me) is the factory "sports option" block, Alan do you have any more information on that?

Ben how are you doin, all I will say is that you have that lovely historic block but looking at your ¼ mile times there must be a problem somewhere and that perhaps some upgrade/tune up would be in order, or maybe the problem lies elsewhere, (did you say that you built it)

Love ya

A momentous and emotional day as my creation went out into daylight for the first time.

Think that the hard part is over but there are still many little jobs to do over the winter

Boys Oh, they look weird without all the body and bits :)

Hope you're going to set up the fuelling by the Freddie Dixon method of getting the flames the same colour as they come out the exhaust stubs :)

A few long winter nights and she'll be ready for a run down Gurston, keep fiddling away, and think of the grin you'll have
