Because black and white user manual.

Next time you see red in a black and white photo, phone your optician for an appointment.

Thank you for that clear and concise answer but maybe my mistake but I would have thought that a black and white photo would show a red hand a more towards a darker colour than is shown but that is just me and my eyes
Sorry for asking what might appear to some as a stupid question

I know what you mean Steve, if it were a modern photo I'd expect to see the red hand as a light grey - it's probably a combination of strong studio lighting and over exposure that's made it look white.

To be serious (for a moment, at least...) the b/w photos in the factory workshop manuals, owners manuals and other technical literature were often 'tuned' to make them clearer, and to avoid mistakes.

That included changing colours/tones on components to make them clearer in the photos, so you might not need to worry your optician unless you really can see red...

Advertising has been 'tuned' for many, many years then - as photoshop and the current mag adverts have us belive now.

I love the mousse on the centre console on the LHD rally Z - bloody good idea that !

Did they actually smoke while rallying or was there another reason for all the fag ash around the ash tray (poor flicking technique)?

Edgar Herrmann and Hans Schuller in particular were inveterate smokers. They even had holders for their packets of 20 and box of matches built into the car, wherever possible.

Rally servicing included emptying the ashtray...

I remember being at Kevin Bristows garage not long after he purchased the works rally car and he was trying to do a lot of research into it prior to starting the rebuild that he thought the 2 small holes in the door were where some sort of device was fixed to keep ciggie packets easily to hand Cant remember if it was clarified or not

All this talk and I kinda want one now...

Better save the money for parts that actually get the car moving though :D
