Nissan/Nismo R200 LSD

I've already got the Nismo finned cover & cooler fitted to mine. :D

I think I'm gonna get a spare open R200, weld it up, see how I like it, then decide to buy the Nismo unit from one of the mysterious LSD dealers on this thread.

Well, I'm gonna ask my Nissan dealer again, see if I can get prices out of him.

This diff issue really does my head in... My Z only does about 5000 miles a year so a welded diff might not be so bad. I've heard Quaife's can be a bit unpredictable & to be honest I'd rather stick to a clutch jobbie.

That confuses me :conf2:
If a car had 500 hp (I wish lol) would it not break away a lot easier?
I.e. looking at it/the vid .... If a std 240 made 140bhp @ the wheels, both wheels, would spin as there’s not enough power going through them?... but if you look at the same vid again ... but with 250 bhp this time.... surely it would break away on one wheel easier this time

I think you need to go back to basics and try to understand exactly what is happening inside a plate / clutch type LSD.

It was plain to see that your LSD wasn't limiting very much of the slip - ie, one driveshaft was spinning more than the other. That - to me at least - indicates a fairly low breakway torque setting. It has nothing to do with power or torque over and above the amount that is needed to get one wheel spinning; everything else is about the LSD setting at that point.

These things are difficult to explain in words on a forum like this. I could do with some models / cutaway examples in front of me to help explain what is going on.

One question: did you check the LSD clutch / shim packs internally before bolting the diff into the car, and/or did you check the breakaway torque setting? ( and I'm not talking about what somebody 'told' you........ ).

And I'm not saying that your LSD is 'faulty' or anything like that. I'm just pointing out that its 'limiting' of slip is quite benign from what I see. I'm sure you are quite happy with it. After all, your car is not a race car..........

Christ Wyn - are you saying that you had an LSD fitted there ?

My Count, my Prince - do you have nos. 9 and 10 ?

If I’m honest …. then no. I was informed (not told lol) no mods would be needed for my rd use. I didn’t adjust anything as I was advised to leave it as is. I was given various spare plates, so adjustments could be made if needs be. Not that I would know how tho, n I deffo dont want to take it apart atm lol

Fair enough. But you take my point? I don't think your diff preload is set very high, and even if it was, the treatment you gave it with your Santa Pod donutting would probably have loosened it off a fair amount.

I was trying to remind us all that talk of what diff / LSD is "better" is subjective nonsense unless the ins and outs of each type are fully understood.

Count - are you taking the pith ? Remember the 10 maths of the Z ? I had 8 of them and asked you for the last two ? I sent you the list and.....

Oh, that. I thought I'd been released without further questioning........

Anyway, this thread is supposed to be about diffs.

I'm still puzzled about how your diff came "straight from Japan" Sean..........

It was just that...since I had your attention :) !

You should know Count, it came via you - isn't that where you get them from ?

Yes, I get them direct from Japan. So if yours came via me, you didn't get it "straight from Japan" did you?

I see, the word 'straight' disturbs you. Ok, the diff was sold to me by the Count who sourced, bought and imported it from Japan.

I did not get it 'straight' from Japan but via the best, most reliable source known for quality, hard to find genuine Nissan / Nismo parts in Japan.

In no way did I mean to infer that I had used my own initiative to obtain such parts - my apologies if that was how it appeared !:)

Anyway guys,

I've decided to go with Quaife. I spoke to them today & my diff will be ready in two weeks. :D
