London to Capetown Rally 2012.

I know it's not the same car - the roof-line gives it away ! I figured that since there are two Zs, the spotlight should fall equally.........

And only be coincidence that it once rusted, sorry, rested in a known back garden...........

My opinion (and thats all it is) is based on a good walk round and close look on Sunday.
There are no exotic parts etc on it. i think its a good honest example of its type.
And its deffo not rusty or patched up.

Photos after this text at the bottom of the page suggest otherwise.......... :

The years of excess booze, prescription drugs, loose soft-tops and fast food have taken it’s toll, ‘The Ugly One’ has been checked into a secret clinic and is undergoing an extensive course of rehabilitation. Initial reports are encouraging and a full recovery is expected.

So we differ in our opinions... fine.
I think its a competent car that has been resored properly and now looks good.and is fit for the purpoase intended.
You dont.agree clearly.
Thats car club forums.
Now moving on.............

I haven't seen it so can't quote on it not NOW being rusty BUT the photos do indicate that it has been repaired and therefore was rusty - 'patched up' are not my words mate.

We all know that rust is relative - rust free doesn't exist but call a spade a spade.

It might be amusing to think that the 'spares Z' will help out this one in case of need - that's what it's all about too.

Stupidly I posted up my opinion of one of the cars .

All threads go the same way and it winds me up.

Here we have a Thread about a couple of crews doing a challenging rally in a car that this club represents/supports.

Both are inexperienced at these events and deserve credit for what they are doing - it would be a lot easier punching keys on a keyboard.

I have competed in rallies and I can tell you it's a tough sport.

Where do think this thread is going then Rob ?

There are TWO 240Zs on the rally and most of the comments (and they weren't positive) were directed towards one of them.
I've drawn attention to the second one and now the thread starter is off whinging...because ?

I think it's fabulous that anyone has the balls to take this event on, any event on - it's soon the MC Historic, Boucles de Spa, I've been contacted by someone wanting to do a Portugese rally in a Z (yes pmac, why I was asking after your other car)....

That said, the criticism has mainly been directed towards the pro preparer of the first Z but like I said, if the guys can help others out because they've taken more kit with them - all well and good.

Not sure why anyone needs ZG arches on a rally car but I've seen others - maybe they fancied the 'look' !

Dont get wound up by it Rob. Its only a car club forum. So not of any importance in real life.
I was hoping (clearly in vain) that 2012 might be a better year on this forum/board..
But its already looking like a re run of 2011 with Seans continual presence on virtually every thread in his usual confrontational manner.
I personally dont give a toss what he says but I do worry that many of the newer/younger/quieter members will be discouraged from ever contributing to any thread.with him around.

anyway.... I reckoned this 510 was ultra cool and was driven/navigated by a couple of really sound Aussie blokes who I spent a little time talking with.
pics...

You mean the Cotina 1600E clone:devil::eek:

Thanks, shame I missed the opportunity to see this "kick off" would have been nice to be around rally cars again;)

I know there are less than 5 people on here interested in rallying so just for you...........

I'm not apologising for showing interest and participating - if you don't want to share and this news was VERY late being posted, luckily you did for it gave us over here the opportunity to see and meet the cars/drivers and share some photographs with you.

In any case, I would have posted it up here (too late) because an article came out yesterday (attached) mentioning the Datsuns.

I'm not confronting you Pete - just putting across another view backed up by photographs from the cars' own site that contradict your view - it IS after all a forum where all views may be aired and NOT a points -scoring/pi**ing contest.

I DID find it unfair that the only car being closely observed was that which looked unseemly so brought attention to the second whereupon YOU started to complain about the thread - why was that I wonder ?

As previously stated, it may be that the spares-package, unseemly looking Z might finish where others don't so let's hold our tongues 'til the fat lady sings eh ?;)

2011...2012...you have to ban me to keep me quiet - it's encouraged to participate - I do and I don't give a rats' ar*e what the "newer/younger/quieter" wall-flowers think - they participate or not - it's their choice and I'm sure that they're big and mature enough to make up their own minds and choose - they don't need a champion and certainly not Mr Grumpy.:p

I'm suddenly encouraged as one of the "quieter" ones to have a say now! I was down at Brooklands too on Sunday, indeed parked my blue 240Z on the banking (with Z-Club sticker) and none of you who were there left me a note!

I've been in rallying as a navigator for 20 years, still occasionally get out, and I agree with Rob that it's great that these guys are giving a really tough event a go in proper cars - of course they are not perfect, but I for one would love to be doing the event myself.

Well I was there with my good buddy from the Rally preparation world.
we had to park in the Merc World/ Experience car park.
We didnt see any other 240Zs other than the competitors.
Its nice to know there are a few more members who share our enthuiasm for the revived Z rally scene.

Add me to the list of rally fans as well.

Still hold a Rally marshal licence, and officiate on 12 cars 20/20 and Single venue, although our multi venue Kent Rally seems to have gone now.

As I said I have a particular interest in this event as two of my friends are lying second at the moment.

They are both fellow Sevenoaks Motor Club members and coincidentally the guest speaker at our awards in Feb is Stuart Turner, who was a SDMC member when he lived in Bromley and worked on MN.

Event report extract from Greece:

The two Datsun 240Zs have taken on a good service to their brakes – and one needed a cracked oil-cooler repaired. The Greeks are providing a service for anyone.

Car 38 is 8th O/A

Car 28 is 32nd O/A

Total still running about 45.

Been done before in an Austin A90 Westminster :D

Eric Jackson did a similar epic trip too:

Eric Jackson - Complete with kitchen sink - one of his many epic crossings of the Sahara desert.
En-route from Capetown to Southampton
