London to Capetown Rally 2012.

So what is SO ridiculous today about carrying the maximum amount of stuff on what is not an out and out performance rally but one of endurance and without assistance ?

Like the brolly rack on the second car.
Looks like he's prepared for deep water too.

Surely the umbrellas are like tools I use in my job.... when it stops working it's an extra implement to hit it with.... gentle persuasion!

Sean - read Brian's ( amocrace ) earlier comment - it says it all.

He's been there, built them, done it, etc., etc.

Car 38 retired - Missed the Ferry from Piraus (Athens). I assume they had trouble causing a delay.

Car 28 dropped down to the 20s

P510 now 7th

According to reports Rob, slid off and damaged front. Repaired but ferry Captain had decided to depart as soon as all the cars were on board to avoid heavy seas, and set off early so 240Z missed boat.

Have heard from Andy Elcomb who is co-driving in 14 and they are now apparently faced with a difficult decision

Which drink to go for as it is all free:D

MilliondollarZ is FLYING to Djeddah...
Maybe still in the race as the ferry actually left early due to bad weather announcement!
After snow and ice, Greece mud was a training for Kenya if the wet is there again!
Courage and bonne chance to them!

P510 now 10th

Wackey Races 19th

Second 240Z now back in (after air lift) at 41st

:driving:

And my mates are now in the lead in the Tonka toy.

That is a bit of an advantage, a 2010 Toyota Hilux ;)

I'm sure 'our' guys will find a devious plan to force ahead :driving:

Latest News from Kenya !

It was an easy day for all except the two Datsun 240Zs. The Tromans & Russell Datsun has been coping with a broken suspension upright after hitting potholes, while the Thistlethwayte & Hiscox's car is having a troubled time with overheating and currently still in Ethiopia making very slow progress towards the border. The border is now closed until tomorrow morning.

P510 is 9th

240Z Tromans/Russell 19th

240Z Thistlethwayte/Hiscox 42nd (last)

Colin, your mates in the Toyota Hilux are still leading I think!

Yes Rob still there and currently enjoying a beer at the camp site which is apparently an improvement on the previous hotel.......They did have a puncture and wheel has now been changed. Sounds like it has been a bit rough today-from rally page

Cars that have not yet reached Marsabit, ...rescue has been dispatched, include…

  • Ralf Weiss & Kurt Schneiders, Mercedes 230E - have a holed sump. They are trying to fix it with local help and a fibre glass kit, but remain close to the Sololo Junction control point, 170km from Marsabit tonight.
  • Alex Thistlethwayte & David Hiscox, Datsun 240Z – Have no spare tyres left. They are near the Lonely Tree checkpoint 95kms from Marsabit.
  • Renger Guliker & Pim ‘t Hart, BMW535 – holed sump for the second time. At 23:00 they are on the move again 65kms from Marsabit .
  • Jean-Pierre & Mireille Demierre, Peugeot 504 – have broken suspension 47kms from Marsabit.
A few of the problems suffered by others…

  • Martin & Josephina Aaldering, Volvo PV544 – have broken axle links but limped in to Marsabit at 23:30
  • Andy Actman & Andy Elcomb, Toyota Hilux – had a puncture.
  • Jane Edgington & Gill Cotton, MG Maestro – fuel pipe leak - fixed, and accelerator cable tied up with cable ties.
  • Paul & Diane Unwin, MG ZR – rear shock problems.
  • Owen Turner & Matt Fowle, MG ZR – burst all the shock absorbers and stopped to fit spares.
  • Alastair Caldwell & Hayden Burvill, Porsche 912 – changed a shock absorber, but the top mount is also broken.
  • Paul Carter & John Bayliss, Volvo 144 – two shock absorbers failed.
Nairobi and the prospect of a day off beckons ...we are at the Safari Park Hotel tomorrow night.

Don't know if the Dawsons Escort has made it yet as they had to get a strut cobbled together after the replacement being air freighted out didn't arrive- Don't ask them about DHL international !!

From the rally page.

Alex Thistlethwayte and David Hiscox, who are running very close to the Dawson Escort, have tweeted that they spent last night camped on the roof of their Datsun 240Z believing that hyenas do not jump.

Perhaps having that many spare wheels on the 38 car wasn't such a bad Idea.....

Some pics of the two 240Zs in service are here

Looks like the 510 may have been penalised for running non period shocks...

At least the Dawsons Escort has now managed to catch up and they are now waiting for the new Gartrac strut to catch up with them....

The Tuthill Porche no.45 has also been penalised for running illegal shocks.
It has been running full Safari spec reservoir units from the start.
Not surprising really as it is a full Safari spec car:rolleyes:
Check out the suppporting Hilux in the pic..... That co-driver sounds familiar:rofl:

[Yeah....like the 240Zs are running KYBs................../QUOTE]

If you look at the pics you can see they are both running fully event compliant set ups.
Car 38 is utilizing the stock spring pan system. Car 28 has welded on coiil over units.
