L28 Turbo

Simon was kind enough to let me have a drive in his car today, what a good job he has done and in such a short time. My experiance of driving turbo Zs are Phils Sorar turbo engined Z and a L28 turbo motor blowing through a set of triples running 1 bar of boost. Simons is certanly comparable with Phils engine with masive torque produced at low rpm at at the present boost settings has to be around 300bhp and after the rolling road set up and 1bar will be up in the 400s. Once moving you only need 4th and 5th gear and also noticable was the lack of any lag to speak of . Great job very quick car that also is really nice on the suspension.

Thanks for the Kind words Dave, much appreciated. It was raining hard on the day I wanted to take it to the RRoad last week. I'll take it down one day this week, wind up the boost a little and see what that old 2.8 lump will do!

Fitted my PMAC supplied R200 3.7 LSD today, took it for a quick blast, very nice although now I just spin 2 wheels in first and second instead of 1 :)

yep...just need a boost controller now, way too much power in the mid range like it is. Oh and some sticky tyres!! :)

Cool. I can recomend the Toyo888's or yoko 48r's. I have exsprienced both these tyres on track and road, wet and dry and they are excellent. Indeed the 888's are used by our very own Mr Skiddell at the Drag strip and as we know, he's the fasted 240z(normally aspirated) in the country!

hmmmm 888's it has to be then....at least that will rule out any...."ah yeah but he was using a better tyre" debates :)

Wise choise . You will be gobsmacked at the extra grip compared to a normal road tyre. You'll need that controller to turn the boost up!!

Had a go at fitting my SD rear cage section, good job I'm changing the roof panel as I put 2 dents in it trying to make it fit! One job has turned into lots more now, I found some more rust so decided to cut out the floors, reinforce the sills, strip out the sound deadening material, remove the dash, fit my boost gauge in place of the clock and fit a new Tacho. Then I have to buy some bucket seats and harnesses. I modified the cage by adding an extra bar for the driver side harness to wrap around. Work on this car is never ending! but fun.

Is that an early SD rear cage then, do the floor plates bolt directly to the floor?

If so the roof denting problem was common.

Always best to start restorations with the body first and remove the engine. That way you avoid the frustration of having a 'running car' that you can't use.

Good luck, we need to see this car on the tracks this summer!

Yes I should have stripped the shell and fixed all the rest at the start but I wanted to drive it, I knew it would never been a decent shell and eventually will install everything in a LHD solid shell. I've owned lots of LHD cars, I like driving on that side so I will probably leave it as LHD.
Yes the cage bolts to the floor, it would have been fine if I had cut the seat support out first...maybe an installation write up would be good once it's fitted. Once I have fitted new floors there won't be that much rust left in the thing!
It will b e on the track this summer...it may not be pretty but it's quick! :)

The later roll-cage fits into boxes welded between the seat mounting, rear floor and sill. I don't think floor mounted cages are legal for official motorsport events anymore.

Understand fully what you are saying about wanting to drive it first. I've had my car about 12 years. Ran it for 2 without touching it and then took the engine out to rebuild it. Whilst out I noticed a few rusty areas and it went on from there.

Mine's not pretty either but it's fairly quick for what it is. LHD probably wouldn't bother me either because I don't do a lot of road mileage, however most British tracks are run clockwise so I'd always be on the outside. Not sure if I'd like that.
