James May and Damon Hill drive my 260Z!

I don't know about anybody else, but most of my "toy" cars over the years have been a result of seeing one either on the road, at a show or on TV and thinking "wow, that is ace, gotta have one!' I didn't give a gnat's chuff about the ins and outs of model numbers, market differences, etc. just where can I get one and how much will it cost me?

Sean is right, exposure is king. The premise of the piece was cack, but the Z looked glorious, in front of a nationwide audience of car lovers. What's not to like??

Just to set the record straight Alan this is how I remember it (which was a long time ago for an old guy like me):

I'm shopping in Sainsburys and Duncan calls me - he has been contacted to supply a nice 260Z for a TV show at Oulton Park...

I was wondering why The Z Farm was the first point of contact, but now you tell me that there was yet another trader/supplier in the chain?

I was surprised that the first point of contact was not the main owners club in the UK, as that would have been my first port of call in that situation.

My postman and my best mate both thought it a great advert for the Datsun so if they think so it must have been good. ;)

Had no reply from another mate in the village with 2 E Types.

So, where will you get one (an original UK market '260Z') and how much will it cost you?

Yes, it's nice to see a good car on a TV show like that. I just don't understand some of the "it's good exposure" and "it's good for us" type comments that follow. To what end?

There are only a handful of such cars left extant in the UK. There are no stock examples for sale at this time as far as I'm aware. What happens next?

Everything has it's price Albrecht. If somebody wants one bad enough, they'll go find one. If the seller is reluctant to part, the price will go up and hopefully set a new price "norm". I probably paid over the odds for mine, but then I'm one of George Osbourne's "Pension Pot Spenders", and I'm sure I'm not the only one! See it, want it, sniff it out and pay too much for it is my credo. ;-)

Well said Sam. We so rarely manage to get our cars on TV - they don't even appear that often in car mags. It's all MGs, Triumphs etc. Glad you liked the car.

240's appear all the time in car mags. One magazine once said to me that they aim to get at least 1 car in every months edition and the only thing that stops this is the lack of original/special cars being built. TV coverage isnt quite as good but then there aren't that many car UK car programs that could feature a nice S30.

No, no Young Skywalker - TV is everything and the Z needs its reguler 15mins fame !

Exactly.....the main point is that you have one to enjoy NOW with 'perhaps' the chance that any eventual selling price won't leave you out of pocket as prices rise.

Everyone always said that there is an infinite number of cars still to import....the reality is different and if there are supposedly 160 240Zs on the UK roads (of which how many are original UK market shells....no, don't go there, that's for another time and no more shocking than every other period classic car), there have been last year a near 15% increase and that's just the cars I know about and I don't even live your side !

The Z Club doesn't have the same 'commercial' exposure as Duncan ?

Maybe Google doesn't like Zclub.net ?

I'm sorry Alan that you still 'don't get it'....I can't see anyone seriously rushing out to get an original UK market 260Z following that programme......BUT I can see people turning towards and thinking of getting AN S30 !

And THAT is what is important - changing the punters' impression of a Z by nationwide filming of one and around a track and doing well !

Coming out on top was simply a bonus.

Going back to the punters (sorry, potential buyers - catch you later chaps), if demand increases so will the supply of cars even if bought at higher prices now. THAT can only be good for the Z scene in general - as Hannibal Lector said ''nobody covets something they don't see''.
More Zs mean more Zs......and more Zs means more exposure, more appreciation and ultimately better cars being exposed, more stock ones as well hopefully.

Where is all THIS leading you may ask.......?

Well, action - reaction : this club may well have to adapt and get a bit more serious and less of a social chat-room.....we'll see.:)

Got to disagree with ^^^ statement.

One magazine once said to me that they aim to get at least 1 car in every months edition and the only thing that stops this is the lack of original/special cars being built. .

There is only a handful of UK cars featured. And the same ones keep on appearing in different magazines.

In all other cases, the S30's featured in UK car magazines are from overseas contributors ( US/ Europe/Australia).

I believe that magazines need to reach out more to non "240z" s30 variants and subsequent members of the Z family.

I know there are some that think I am out of touch with things but when I joined the club I joined mostly to meet like minded people and chatting to them about this that and the other and a hell of a lot of the time having a great laugh by not being too serious about things

If the club/forum turns into a straight laced completely factual place outweighing the social banter IMHO it will be boring to 95% of the people who visit here

There is no need for black and white and therefore room for both......and I also joined the club to meet people, but also to have advice upon buying, running and maybe modifying a Z.

It seems to me that the 'banter' isn't always appreciated so what if 20-30% was replaced by more serious chat AND presentation of the cars as they become more recognised in the classic world, surely this club should evolve and adapt to the member's needs ?

But who can decide what it is the members needs
Is it for the purist S30 enthusiast's needs
Is it for the modified S30 enthusiast's needs
Is it for the S130 enthusiast's needs
Is it for the Z31 enthusiast's needs
Is it for the Z32 enthusiast's needs
Is it for the 350Z enthusiast's needs
Is it for the 370Z enthusiast's needs

For gods sake how can a thread about a member getting a car shown on national TV for the first time in a few years turn into a discussion on the ins and outs the reason of the programme

We should all be congratulating the owner for doing it the same as we should congratulate any owner who tries to get involved with articles in the national press

Bravo Steve!!! Spot on!!!

I HAVE congratulated him, defended the 'goodness' of it......do you not want that treasured banter with it or should banter only be in its place and time.....wherever that is.

It's called socialising Mr Burns...why you and I joined - remember ?

As to the first questions - the members (of all models) can decide - no ?

But also The Club can propose, from which choices can be made......or not.

If I may, I would like to offer a perspective I feel many people have but unwilling to express publicly.

Put personal perspectives or good intent to one side. Or even the fact that what is said is 100% factually correct. Now read this thread again through the the eyes of a newcomer to the club.

It's akin to attending someone's wedding and seeing people discussing out loud why the Bride and Groom are completely unmatched, why the bride is too old or too fat for the groom and what a pointless wedding it is. How on earth did they meet? what a ridiculous way to meet!?

Then they bang on and on about it, bringing in lots of valid and factually correct arguments to embolden their position. Then when the other guests kindly ask them to turn the volume down, they take offence and retort with: it's my opinion, it's a free country, if you don't like it, don't listen, maybe you can't handle the truth (OK, so those weren't the exact words used but you get the gist).

Absolutely right, in an open forum everyone has the right to freely express views however that must surely be tempered with wisdom and courtesy for others. Sometimes not saying anything gains far more respect than saying whatever you feel like even if correct.

This is just a gentle, polite request to allow Riddler to have his day and let the rest of us enjoy the thread and the limelight shed on the Z without the joy being sucked out of it with arguments that while utterly correct, achieve nothing whatsoever.

I'm certain this post will draw much fire and wrath but I just wanted to bring balance to the force!

Spot on Ali......sorry, I just CAN'T sit back and allow some great publicity be so questioned and interrogated....although I won't just say ''I don't agree with 'you'' without quantifying 'my' side.
