Which exhaust?

Can anyone recommend an 'off the shelf' stainless exhaust system to fit a 6-into-2 mild steel manifold (MJP supplied)? (to fit a 2 seater 280zx)...and I'm after some serious burbling noise on tick-over! Side exit perhaps? Staight through? Any thoughts?

Hi m8,

You and I are in the same boat in that we both want stainless exhausts with a nice burble.

If you want to see all the comments about exhausts on this site you're better off doing an advanced search for stainless and exhaust under the 240/260/280 sub-heading.

I have done the same search on the American site http://www.classiczcars.com and I think you will get a better idea from them as there are simply more people doing more mods on that site.

Personally, I have decided on a stainless 3 into 2 manifold (think it's a janspeed) with a 2" straight through pipe to either a tanabe or 5zigen sports box with a 3" exit.

I think that a smaller section pipe gives a higher pitched exhaust note, wheras a larger pipe gives a deeper tone, I could be wrong.

I shall have a look at the website and see what I can find! Thanks.

A local exhaust specialist (Mick Poulton from Torque Technique, just outside Salisbury- highly skilled chap; a perfectionist too) quoted around £450 plus VAT for a s/s single pipe system, which is realistic for a custom pipe, but I'm just anti spending that sort of money when I know there are other parts that need attention! Anyway, he recommended a 2.25 inch pipe, possibly 2.5inch, to enable the desired gas flow...noise, apparently, is 'developed' within the backbox, but pipe diameter must strongly influence it.

Incidentally, prior to the recent work I've done on my car, I was running a Janspeed expansion chamber as the backbox- old stock they were throwing out- and the note was blissful. Not sure it would pass the MoT though...

Many thanks.

When my exhaust recently fell off, a week after the MOT, I searched for anything to replace it. No luck anywhere. MJP suggested PD Gough but they are in Nottingham, I think, no South London. Also they were expensive at £1200 but it was custom made on the car. QuickSilver quoted me nearly £900.

Eventually I settled for a custom made on the car exhaust from Longlife. They have outlets over the south of England. Cost £300. Looks good , sounds good.

Here is what they said:
"A custom build stainless exhaust system for your Nissan 280zx would usually run from the base of the down pipe through to the rear of the car. Included in the base system price would be a standard style 2.5" rolled lip style tailpipe. You can of course choose an alternative or upgrade from our extensive range of about 55 tailpipes if you wish.

Because all of our systems are custom built, you are able to tell us how you would like the car to sound, anywhere from quiet to full sport. The most popular choice is Mild Sport, which gives a slight note when you open the accelerator, yet without being intrusive.

The system is guaranteed for as long as you own the car, and this is a fully transferrable warranty. It's also a "No Hassle" warranty - we believe it is the very the best warranty in the industry.

If you are interested in technical specifications, the system is built in 304 grade stainless steel throughout, and assembled using high frequency TIG welding. All of our systems are built using freeflow technology, so your engine will breathe better than with conventional systems. This usually gives a noticeable improvement in the torque from your engine - particularly at lower revs. We have numerous testimonials from customers who have experienced both improved engine performance and fuel economy.

Fitting is by appointment - we usually require a vehicle like yours for around 3.5 hours while we custom build and fit the system. If you chose to wait with your car, we have waiting facilities with coffee and internet access. If it makes life easier, we may be able to make a courtesy car available while yours is with us. There is no charge for a courtesy car, but there is an age restriction."

Hope that helps someone.

Add one 1980 280ZX 2 seater (LHD) to that group buy list and I'm serious !

It can be made to fit onto any down-pipe configuration ?

I may also be able to find other 2+2 buyers over here. I consider £300 very reasonable !

when i get my 250 GTO finsihed i will be taking mine to the same place HOUSEQUAKE got his done !!!! somewhere in Sheffield,it looks great and it sounds great,it sounds like a V8.i think it cost him about £350 from the manifold back.please correct me if i am wrong.

That's right Ivor, they supply zorsts to Pimp my Ride...not sure if that's something to shout about but I was advised to go there after a mechanic friend had seen the quality of their workmanship.

They fitted my Janspeed manifold and custom built a 2 1/2" straight thru s/s section to a 4" Jap style back box of my choice.

What can I say? This opened up the performance no end and gave me the deep burbley tone I was after.
