What does the headlining look like?

Hola.

Next thing I need to do on my 280z s the headlining. Because it's currently done in the style of a late 70s brothel (I'm guessing):

I'm planning to do it in a black vinyl as I think that's what it originally had.. but can anyone show me what it actually looks like? Is it smooth, or leather patterned? Does it have perforations?

Was thinking of using this 3mm foam backed 'pebble' vinyl from Martrim:

Or theres the non foam backed one with a bigger pattern:

Or the same thing but perforated:

It is actually done quite well, and my girlfriend really wants me to keep it as she loves anything kitsch. But no.. its days are numbered.

If anyone could take some nice photos of theirs for me that would be massively appreciated!

Your girlfriend has taste (she's got you so you can't argue) and I love it ; I would simply change the rear suspension turret covers tho...

I got some perforated which I like and is a change for the usual 'almost' smooth.

The perforated will look good. I think the original had some kind of foam backing /insulation etc which stopped drumming and helped the acoustics. But it sometimes turned to dust over the years and just fell apart and came unstuck - hence the monstro lovely thing you now have.

Ever thought of some kind of animal skin up there - that might work.

Hmm, you got me there 🤔

Ok so that's new headlining? I like it. No leather texture at all.

What was it like before?

Yeah, it is one step away from full leopard print isn't it.

I am going to line the roof with Dodo mat and the closed cell foam too, so should hopefully have a modern version of whatever disintegrated before this!

What confuses me is that this renovation was obviously done pretty early in the cars life, as the driver's bolsters are worn right through.

Just done my headlining on the weekend, I used smooth vinyl from Martrim. I backed it on scrim foam but also insulated the roof lining beforehand. It's a job worth doing with 2 people and taking your time over to get a nice finish. Didn't take any pictures but I can confirm it looks good, to me at least. The original standard headlining is, what I can assume, some sort of smooth black vinyl with foam on the back as I had an old one that I removed from another car to use as a template.

Ahh brilliant, I may end up picking your brain a bit more then as you've got recent experience!

What kind of insulation did you put on the roof? I was planning on putting more Dodomat Hex up there (the bitumen/butyl type stuff), followed by a layer of the 5mm closed cell foam. But then I was thinking, will sticking foam to foam work? What kind of glue did you use by the way?

And is this the scrim foam you used?: https://www.martrim.co.uk/car-trimming-supplies/product-details.php?productId=459
