I would suspect that after the first 18 months they were not at their optimum.

If you are going to store R888s, make sure they are in a cool spot, in the dark and under covers and the rubber will keep alive longer, and give them a wash..........yes that does help

The other option to careful storage is to get out in the car more and try to wear them out in the first year.
