Throttle Pedal/linkage slack

I recently removed all the throttle linkage parts to refurb them.

Everything works as before, just smoother, however i removed some of the slack on reassembly to try and improve the operation,
but now on rough roads and speed bumps the throttle is a bit twitchy under foot!

Obviously Ive over adjusted the slack, so was just wondering how it should be set, and how others have theirs?
 
They are twitchy especially if you have a modified engine and driving on a rough road.

Do you still have a damper on the manifold?

Drive in a high gear :eek:
 
i had the same issue
whats worse is the SUs i have on the car arent quite the same as datsun origenals and the SU throttle linkage arm was much longer than the origenal datsun arm so wasnt opning fully at full throttle.
having drilled a new hole closer to the spindle to reduce the length i made it a little too short which has made it as twitchy as anything:eek:
im going to make some new arms over the winter so theyre the same length.

lol, but where's the fun in that... I'd much rather fill my trousers, when a twitchy loud peddle causes the rear to step out on a wet bumpy roundabout!!
 
Why do you simply bin the linkage rods and replace with a cable instead ? Throttle pedal feel is smooth and predictable..

In a nut shell, because i prefer the look of the linkage rods in the engine bay ;)

But... if there was an off the shelf, bolt on cable replacement that was way better, I would consider it, but there isnt as far as im aware :unsure:

Agreed about the looks - but when most zeds are wearing wider wheels, lowered suspension, upgraded seats etc, the "originality side" is weak IMHO.

I swapped over to a cable set up and it was quite easy to execute and works a treat. The cable can be bought easily from ebay and pulley disc ( lever), I got from Japan and it was an afternoons work. I will add some pictures later in case anyone is interested :)

SU gear manufacturers can sell you most of the bits that could bolt on with little effort.
like you though i prefer the look of the original linkages.

That looks pretty tidy actually, nice job, might as well remove the remains of the old linkage and throttle rod tho :D

Im still not keen on the cable over the cam cover tho, the choke cables look messy enough on there own! I suppose you could always have a longer cable and snake it round the engine, but then that kinda defeats the point if it binds too much :rolleyes:

Well spotted- the redundant linkages need to go !

As for cable location, it could be routed more discreetly I am sure if needed and would still function well.
