Stolen/Recovered Recording

My son Lee had his house broken into yeterday and his keys and car stolen. His car is his pride and joy a Clio Cup 172 (30k miles and just serviced, taxed and full of fuel - pay day!) . Still with 2 years finance on it.

He is now thinking he doesn't want it back in case it has been thrashed and also that it will be shown as Stolen/Recovered which will reduce the value.

If it is found undamaged in as good condition as before the theft (yes I'm dreaming here!) it is shown as stolen on Hpi checks?

Sorry to hear that Rob, not sure about showing up on HPI checks, I think I'll be fitting a tracker soon looks like the best way to go.

Not 100% certain on this Rob but as far as I know it only appears on police records as stolen so that when it is taxed the police visit the new owners address to check the car out. This is what happened with my rally Mazda 4x4.

I think you'll find it's placed by the insurance company not the police and only if there has been a total loss payout.

I'd agree that it is placed by the insurance company, but if the police are involved they will inform the insurance company. I was under the impression that any theft/recovery was recorded, the argument being that that information may be of use to future buyers of the car and future insurers. I understand there is a procedure for getting a car off the stolen recovered register, by having it inspected by some official body

if the car is found undamaged it and is not subject to a claim then it retains its full value but if it is found arfter a claim has been paid out on it then goes onto the dlva register as either a cat c or cat d write of depending how the insurance company catagries the claim found this out when i started working in a vehicle dismantles yard
