Slipping out of 5th gear

I've got an early 280ZX box I'll be installing in the coming weeks, it's of unknown condition - I hope all the syncros work..

Never come across these problems with Z gear boxes on any of my cars, the only thing on some cars was the second gear syncro.

An s14 box does sound interesting and I will search over on hybridz for more info.

I was reading that 5th gear is only meant as a cruising gear on the Zd's and not a hard pulling gear as the teeth are different from 1st to 4th?

In the mean time I'll start trying to locate a s14 box and anyother bits and bobs that are needed.

If You do the swap, shove some pics up please...:)

One assumes the gear ratios are the same as the box that has gone faulty?

I run a standard 5 speed 260 box (rebuilt 2 years ago) on a 3.9 diff and it pulls nice from 40 mph all the through to the red line in fith.

I run a standard 5 speed 260 box (rebuilt 2 years ago) on a 3.9 diff and it pulls nice from 40 mph all the through to the red line in fifth.

I didn't like this set-up on my car, it felt under geared and didn't accelerate between the gears very well. The car felt better on it's original 3.5:1 final drive.
Perhaps 3.7:1 would have been a better choice for me at the time.

As things turned out, I swapped to a late 280ZX box which matched the 3.9:1 final drive much better.

I have a problem with 5th gear in my gearbox. When its cold its fine but when warm the problem is getting the gear lever to go over into the 5th/reverse plane. I have to give the gear lever a good old shove to overcome the detent. Once in the 5th/reverse plane there is no problem selecting 5th and it stays there no problem.

Any ideas?

Just found a very good detailed writeup on doing a s13 gearbox swap. Seems to be a fair bit of work involved but ide say it would be well worth it.

Well done Jay, that was quick!

Now strip the old one down and let's see what the problem was, you'll learn from it. I'd love to know if the nut was loose.

Yeah I'll strip it down during the week and have a look inside and see if I can notice anything broken, Dont even know what I'm looking for though so will probably take pics and post them up.

I'm having trouble taking the gearbox apart, bare in mind ive never taken one apart before.....I took all the bolts out that join the 2 halves together, I can pull the box apart about 20mm or so but then it gets stuck and doesn't want to pull apart anymore.

Am I missing something?

Jay, do you have a Haynes Manual? You need to remove the pin with the circlip and a large nut (both at the rear) so that the linkage can be twisted sideways and backwards further than normal so that the other end moves out of alignment with the selector rods. I think that's the problem.

Ah ok thanks for that............I used to have a haynes manual, but gave it a loan to someone and havent seen it since!!

I'll take that nut off tomorrow evening and see if I can get it apart,

Thanks again

Jay

Jay, it's one of those daunting jobs that is so much simpler second time around. It's quite easy really and once it's apart you will understand it so much better.

I split a box about 25 year ago when the main shaft nut came lose.
So a new nut was bought & the back machined down along with the front of the old one then used as a lock nut then hammered the tapered end (don't know what it's called) into the shaft groove.
I sent this box to a local garage to be stripped when I was ill, but they said they couldn't find anything wrong.:(

Ok got the box in half.......Cant see anything broken or loose, Are there more gears in the front half of the box?

One thing I did notice was wear on one side of the teeth on one of the gears.
