Slipping out of 5th gear

An s14 box does sound interesting and I will search over on hybridz for more info.

I have a spare 260 box that I will probably swap next weekend........Hoping that will do for the rest of the summer.

I was reading that 5th gear is only meant as a cruising gear on the Zd's and not a hard pulling gear as the teeth are different from 1st to 4th?

I was pulling hard in 5th on the motorway yesterday when it happened:(

It will stay in 5th cruising at 60 or 70 but put the pedal down and it pops out:rolleyes:

In the mean time I'll start trying to locate a s14 box and anyother bits and bobs that are needed.

Cheers,
Jay

You could have a look on http://www.sxoc.com click on 'community' for the main forum, you will need to sign up, but it is free and this will allow you to see the breakers/parts for sale section. I was running a 200sx S14a up until a week ago, it was the second one I owned and I found the gearbox never to be a problem. I would not bother with a quickshifter, but each to their own.

Ok got the box in half.......Cant see anything broken or loose, Are there more gears in the front half of the box?

One thing I did notice was wear on one side of the teeth on one of the gears.

If you only have the back off then YES! You need to obtain a manual.

Is the nut loose, i.e. is it not 'staked' in position? If you have worn synchros like Ben suggested then that's harder to identify.

The wear on one side of a gear will be the reverse gear I think (the straight-cut gears). I can be damaged by trying to engage it when going forwards as mine was. I tried to select reverse from 3rd at about 80mph at Santa Pod. The top gearbox is a 280ZX, the bottom a SX200, note on the 280 box the reverse gears are 'shifted' into mesh, the SX reverse gears are already in mesh and engaged via a synchro hub (like the forward gears).

I had an ex drift S13 from Japan a few years ago, it had a quick shift setup on the box and found it excelent, I gave that box alot of punishment and never had any trouble with it.....I'll keep an eye out for an s13 box.

Ok got the rest of box apart :)...........I cant see anything obvious wrong but then again I dont know what im looking for.........There doesn't seem to be anything loose or broken anyway.

I only see 1 nut on the gearbox, By (stacked) do you mean the indentation thats in it to keep it tight? if so yes its still tight Rob.

Just found a very good detailed writeup on doing a s13 gearbox swap. Seems to be a fair bit of work involved but ide say it would be well worth it.

If I am correct the 5sp gearbox in my 74 240Z is an A, the same as the 5sp fitted to the 260Z. The 4sp boxes were an A fitted to the 240Z and a B fitted to the 260Z. This article talks of the original 4 sp box fitted to his 72 240Z being a B. Can this be correct? I am considering fitting a C box to my 240Z. However it would appear that the C box can only be mated to the bell housing of a B. Is this correct? If this is correct I will have to find a B bellhousing to make the conversion work.

Any one have any experience of this? Advice would be appreciated.

Dont expect it to be "loose", as in my post, it backs off a fraction (thou) unloading the thrust washer, you cant measure it easily especially by feel
