Shell Finished

Well, the shell is finally finished having had bulkhead swap, floors replaced, chassis rails strengthened and lengthened, oodles of seam and stitch welding, cage fitted, wheel well removed etc etc and the inevitable cosmetic things like dodgy arches sorted. It has been a long time coming but the work is A1, cannot fault it, top job.

As part of the shell preparation it has been body jigged to ensure it is as true as possible for a 35 year old bean tin.

The next step is the zinc plating, big ball ache being they won't allow me to video or take photos of the process because of health and safety. No one is allowed anywhere near the equipment.

Laurence is going there tomorrow to sort dates out and to plead the case for documentary evidence even if they take the pictures or videos themselves. Will get pics if at all possible.

You could leave them a couple of disposable cameras, they have flashes these days and the quality is pretty good.

Look forward to seeing her finished.

The shell was treated ages ago.
Andy collected the shell from Star Motorsport/aka Laurence late in 2007 just prior to the workshops being closed for demolition!!!
It looked like this.....

That's not my shell Pete and the finish on mine is grey but the quality is the same,

It is currently sat in another warehouse in exactly the same state, however, the parts are massing nicely ready to start a "dry" build. I now have pretty much everything for the chassis, ie camber plates, suspension etc etc but still need to order AZ brakes, billet hubs, wheels and tyres. Got some very very trick driveshafts from Laurence, beautifully CV jointed with indestructible (so he says) shafts - the same ones that he fits to the East African Safari cars. These mate up to some trick companion flanges either end, again, the East African Safari stuff. NISMO diff courtesy of Alan, new wiper motor courtesy of PMAC, new switchgear courtesy of the patented incredibly hard to find bits emporium etc etc etc ... have boxes full of bolt on stuff including a couple of sets of new rear lights and some BEAUTIFUL carbon fibre tail light panels.

Most of the build stuff is there, new looms, new glass, new brightwork etc, but I still need to buy seats, interior will need trimming, need to buy clocks, engine mounting kit, fuel cell and no doubts copious quantities of odds and sods.

The engine, box, ECU are all there - will obviously need the exhausts and manifolds custom making at Simpson.

Next stage is to buy a welder, looking at the Portamig 180 to get the camber plates welded in, then source the engine mounts from John's Cars, fit the engine and box, get the rad mounts all sorted - 240Z rad but custom made with in and out to suit the LS2. Once the car is ready to run it will be taken to Simpson race exhausts for the exhaust fabrication, any mounts will be welded on, then it will be stripped for paint. Paint will now be House of Kolor - I know a lot of people hate it and it is a bitch to refinish, but it looks SOOOOOO good when applied properly. I have probably picked the worst of all and have gone for Urethane Kandy.

Once I have the welder, quite some progress will be made in terms of fitting suspension, seat mounts etc.

Sounds easy but it stalled for a while through lack of funds - I have a crazy amount wrapped up in this car so far and I mean CRAZY. I needed 6 months to restock empty coffers to keep going. This car SO FAR has cost me more that my 535d M Sport BMW did just under 2 years old .... we are talking that level of stupid crazy - should have just put an L Series with triples in and enjoyed it two years ago :) Have learned never to underestimate the cost, time and pain of a full ground up build.

So if anyone has some top banana seats (recliner - sparco / top oem / bride ), or a full set of autometer clocks, or a new fuel cell they want to sell SHOUT !!!!!!!!!!

Also, If anyone knows of somewhere about 6 to 10 metres square for rent near Melton Mowbray where the car currently is, please shout. It is sat in my company warehouse but it needs to be moved.

So come on - where are you with this project - it's gone very, VERY quiet !

Also, can you give anymore details on this :

Please.

As far as I know, the shell was disposed of a long time ago but I do not know who bought it - I bought all of the parts that went with it, a lot of new stuff and a lot of things like bonnets, wings, bumpers, lights, new screen, seal kit etc etc.

My bad!
Maybe that pic I have is Larry's spare 2009 shell
Or it was the Vodka kick shell
I have seen a few pass thru the workshop in the last 2/3 years!!. LOL

Dont worrry Rob.... Laurence did leave the building... but only just in time.
The final couple of weeks were rather hectic and a touch acrimonious with his numbskull ex landlord.. Laurence was VERY busy with pre Safari packing and shipping so most of the moving was left to me;), Laurences Dad and his other "old boy" helper Roger.
I will keep you all updated on new premises etc.

Very interesting project you have there Zhead, I shall watch on with interest.

One of guys in the Zclub in NZ has something similar. It was stripped right back to the shell, and purpose built the 240z, running a supercharged LS1. Great all rounder, track work, Targa Rally etc, oh and the drags, although does tend to rather interesting when it comes to traction. :p

Thanks for the post, it looks fantastic and you may inadvertantly have helped me out no end.

I would be really grateful if you could find out for me and post back here what he did to the arches .... They look like they may have been rolled or had some very small extensions fitted and blended, exactly what I am looking for. The more details you can post the better ... will look at the Z Club of NZ site to see if I can dig anything up.

Will also check out alertmotorsports.com off his spoiler

Arch Extensions

ZHead,

Kevin Irons has or had a black 260Z with very similar arch extensions to the ones in the above pics, they way he had it done, on the rear, was to grind away the outer edge of the existing arch to allow the inner and outer skins to seperate then insert a cut down arch repair panel into the gap between the 2 skins, set how far out the new arch needed to go then weld it up, doing it in this manner allows you to keep the standard looking outer arch egde/lip

Hope this helps

This was done on my Super Sam by Spikes bodyshop to put bigger wheels onto the car but keeping the standard edge look.

ZBloke, Dave - FANTASTIC guidance thank you - will check with the welder / engineer / mentor / doer chap and see if this is a viable option. Would not be too expensive but would achieve an OEM look with steel parts. This may well be the answer ! I want a classic look so as standard as possible but need to accomodate fairly big wheels and tyres.

How do you extend the front wing arches ?

How do you extend the front wing arches ?

Well, if I where doing it I first thing would be to see if rear arch repair panels could be used, even if a little cutting and reshaping where needed, to extend the arch

i have a new pair of Rover SD1 arches. These were at one time used to repair 280Zx s IIRC.
I dont know if they are available still but these are surplus to my requirements so make me an offer. They flare out nicely and could be used as the basis for some front or rear flared arches.

I forget which thread is relevant - it's been so long  but what are you planning next ? More body-work, paint, interior ?

How's it gonna drive - road car, track car, drag-strip ?
