Project 240z gunship

Hi mate,

Did you have Kris around this morning looking at your alternator wiring? If so, small world. If not, there's another in Cardiff :)

Wow, you have a lot of extras on your car. Those look like Rota RB wheels, if they are I have several sets of those on my cars. That rear sway bar is a BRE style that mounts behind the rear diff. I run a BRE bar as well. ST suspension is one of the few companies that still make that style of rear bar. Bet the exhaust is loud with no visible muffler, at least that I can see. I have the same front air dam as well with functional duct cooling lines attached, it works very well. Great looking car.

Removing all the adhesive and clearing up some surface rust. I used rust converter before priming , couldn't wait for it to be all one colour.

Door shut prepping

Multiple body shops had been out to see me to give me quotes/advice at this point.
All of the body shops gave me good feedback and said the car was very straight :)
The not so good news was the timing, some guys said they could take it in the new year!!
Others said they could take it in two - three weeks. I got a variety of prices some too cheap making me questioning the quality and some astronomical (clearly didn't want the job)

Whilst having the car MOT'd there was a lovely 911 in at the same time which had just been restored and had a fresh coat of gaurds red, I got chatting to the owner and he recommended a local company called Up To Scratch in Caerphilly. I got on the phone to them and they popped over a few days later. The owner Will gave me a range of prices based on how much work I would put into the tear down and body prep, he was also by far the most understanding person to have come out to see me. We talked alot about colours and I still hadn't decided yet, I was having sleepless nights over white, red , blue or silver (all of which at some point over the previous 6months was sure that is what I wanted ha ha )

If you've had a car painted you will understand the pain :)

Leaving the CSI tent

October/November time , had good weather recently pretty much a dry 3 weeks. Car is now going to the body shop for them to start getting rid of the green and prep the body for paint, the car has three small dents in the roof and a small dent in each door but other than that it seems pretty good. Any signs of surface rust have been ground back and treated then primed. At this point I am feeling pretty damn worn out and almost glad to see the back of it , my girl friend has been very understanding about it all, but I'm spending ALL my time on the Z and not with her

On the way to the body shop

Just decided it was easier to roll all the mess up into the big polly ground sheets and bin the whole lot, hosed the whole lot down inside.
It went from hideous dust trap to clean as whislte in under and hour .:)

On the way to its new home for the next month.

Mine's in bare metal right now and will be painted within days and I still haven't decided on the shade I'm having the car done in
When I saw what fantastic shape the bodywork was in I was even tempted for a moment to just lacquer the bare metal :D

It took me about a year to definitely decide on a colour for my fastback. Then when I decided on a dark red, the guy gave me a book full of dark reds from which to choose. Settled on Porsche Arena Red in the end ...

Body shop

Most of my mine was taken back to bare metal apart from the bonnet /front valance and one of the rear arches, they just removed all traces of green as the stuff is actual military paint and it is oil based which is why its great for preserving Datsun's. I'll fire some more pictures up today.

Here is one right at the start of the body prep (couldn't get that front indicator to disconnect , had to cut the wires in the end)

I asked them to leave the windscreen on the car as both the glass and seal were about two years old and in great condition, they fed a cord around the seal to blow in underneath so there are no hard edges, looks great.

With the car at the body shop I got on with some more prep work, the inspection flaps were taken back to bare metal and treated with rust converter , then etch primed and taken down to the paint shop.
The chrome plating on the bumpers was in pretty good shape but they were going to look a bit out of place next to the gloss black arches so I had them powder coated in gloss black.
The guys did a good job and were pretty reasonable as well.

The arches from MSA needed a bit of love and attention, the fiber glass is pretty raw when it comes from them, so there was plenty of rubbing down to remove the manufacturing marks.
I spent a few evenings with a few cold beers just taking my time rubbing them down.
Once primed I dropped them into the body shop along with the spoiler and they painted them gloss black and lacquered them.
I had finally chosen a color as well, not quite a Datsun color.... I went with Lamborghini Grigio Estoque.
It may not be one for the purists, but I think you will agree it suits the car very well and shows off the lines.
