I hope you won't mind me saying so, but I think that's quite a naff colour choice. I also think you'll get bored with it quite quickly.

Don't mind at all, I can understand why you think I will get bored with it but not why you choose the word naff. I LOVE the colour of the Murcielago in sunlight and my thinking was along the lines of a modernised, uprated version of the S30 with a modernised, uprated version of the orange paintwork. Why naff ? Hideous, lary, too in your face etc etc would all be descriptions I could understand but not naff...... after all, if it is good enough for a £180K supercar ........

The orange car you posted a link to is a totally different colour. I don't like that at all........... anyway......... where colour is concerned is the pot not calling the kettle black ? :D

I've got some good tips on where to get good knock-offs of William Morris fabric prints too. You might like to keep this in mind when you are planning your upholstery. Don't hesitate to ask.:)

Am currently deciding on either Genoese Velvet, Pink studded Latex, Chintz or 1950s style tacky vinyl for the seats, might end up with shag pile carpet and sack cloth seats yet, who knows :D

SeanDezart]And.............it's already been done in the UK :D[/B]

No it hasn't Sean, that is a totally different colour, not pearlescent, not Lambo, not the same at all. At least get some proper ammunition to fire not damp stuff :D

You'll have to harden up a little if you are going to have a car in an unusual colour ( tell me about it.......... ). You'll hear a lot worse than "naff", believe me.

But seriously, I think you have accidentally touched on one of the things that people will throw at you. That is, that it is a Lamborghini colour. I think you'll find that a lot of people will get the impression that you only chose it because what you really wanted was a Murcielago........

But then, if you are not worried what people think, why worry about it?

You have mentioned several times before now that you keep going back to Sato san's car, and you see it as something of an inspiration ( correct? ). That car is painted in a plain 'kitchen appliance' white, with no fancy pearls, flip flops, candy apples or other trick effects. Just plain white. And yet you are constantly drawn to it, and you 'look past' the colour at the fine detailing and nice engineering of the rest of the car. That says something to me. I'd want a car that wears its colour, rather than a colour that wears the car. Something that doesn't dominate........

Pot, kettle, black? I'm not very brave I'm afraid. I'm sticking with period Factory colours. The less popular ones......... ;)

I can cope :D Was interested why you chose the word rather than offended by it.

I love the colour, of course I would like a Murcielago, who wouldn't ?, this however is an S30 and I think this colour suits it very well. How many Zs out there are TVR Chianti Starmist, Candy Apple Red, Vauxhall metallic blue to name just a few I know of ? Has anybody said "oh you really wanted a TVR" ? or "Oh you really wanted a Candy Apple thingummy" ? Has anyone accused Mr F of wanting his 280 to really be a Vauxhall Frontera ? Has anybody pointed a finger at you and said "what you really wanted was a baby sh*t" ? ;) I don't think so :D

But then, if you are not worried what people think, why worry about it?

Indeed - I am actually building this car quite selfishly for me at the end of the day :D

You have mentioned several times before now that you keep going back to Sato san's car, and you see it as something of an inspiration ( correct? ).

Very much so, fridge white, beautifully engineered, clean lines. I think it is a fantastic looking car. Funnily enough I only showed Laurence the pictures today and said that was the look I am after.... but orange. We spoke about carbon fibre overfenders and rear spoiler and discussed the work wheels - Laurence's view is that the offset may be too big on the wheels for what I want and to think carefully as once the rear arches are cut away for the overfenders there is no going back without pain. (I have his sizes and offsets by the way)

I'd want a car that wears its colour, rather than a colour that wears the car. Something that doesn't dominate........

Which do you think will dominate ...... pearlescent orange paintwork or the roar of a 5.7 V8 ? If it is all in keeping then nothing should dominate ideally.

Pot, kettle, black? I'm not very brave I'm afraid. I'm sticking with period Factory colours. The less popular ones......... ;)

:D :D :D :D Your choice is WAY braver than mine

I think the model only gives an indication of the final look.

The model is scaled to 1/18 (at a guess) - but the paint is full scale.

Be it Lamborange or poobrown; each car will be just as distinctive in its own way. We do it for ourselves, and I would question anyone who is concerned about "what others say".

beauty is in the eye of the beholder we all have a choice what i love about this club is when i am at meetings and able to look round at the other cars i love the way each person has put in there own personal touches. from a bog standard original 240z with dustbin lid wheel covers to a twin turbo 260z set up I LOVE THEM ALL

I've always said that a nice looking colour for one car doesn't necessarily look good on another. It depends on size, shape and lines of the car your'e applying it to.

I believe that the colour, the shape of the car, the wheels and the character of the car should all blend perfectly !

What, ZHead is the theme of your car - that may well decide the colour !

Oh, btw continued   for the photos :)

That is actually a very good question and is one that Alan and I have discussed many times. I have no strict theme, ie race, rally etc but instead want to build an up to date, state of the art version of an S30 using the best bits I can afford / beg / steal / borrow. The idea of the colour is to have a modern, contemporary version of an original colour.

As Alan has reminded me many times, the biggest inspiration I have had for my car is Sato san's in Japan, a "kitchen appliance white", almost minimalist, fantastic piece of engineering (see here : http://zhp.satokikaku.com/) Click on "making of S30, then click on catalogue for lots of pictures. This is the look I want and many ideas have been plagiarised

The challenge has been how to combine the clean, elegant and superbly engineered details of Sato san's car with the inevitable "in your face-ness" of an american muscle car with an S30 body. As you can appreciate, the reverence that Sato san has shown in building his car somehow clashes with the idea of a hybrid painted bright orange.

zhead you must also remember why sato sans car is white because it is Japans racing colour ours is "British Racing Green"

Indeed. Colour is so subjective that is is virtually impossible to come to any definitive answer on which one is best. Alan's phrase about a car "wearing" it's colour like a suit of clothes is actually quite right I suppose.
I guess being bright orange will make mine a pimp but nothing else apart from a carbon copy of Sato san's car has really fired my imagination.

Then do the white car or broaden your imagination 'cos I think you'll be disappointed with the orange after a while !

C'mon, what happened to that 1st Samuri since.............whenever ?

What about two colours, maybe orange and...............I dunno..............white ?

If I do get bored with it after a couple of years I could always have it stripped and repainted but I really do feel I will live with it well and enjoy it.

Two tone paintwork has never been my favourite but an orange version of the white one ...... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm cake !!!!

Few more bits for Sean, still have not got to the two main parts bins yet....

The cage is in now so will go and take some pics next week.

Why shouldn't your new heater panel fit ?

I begin to sense something ; with all this newness in your car, aren't you afraid it'll have no...'soul' ? I understand about replacing worn out/broken bits but are you going to keep some oldness in the car or replace everything ?

The nice thing about older cars is that 'oldness'... no ?
