News Flash for Skiddell and probably quite a few more on here !!!

Newsflash for Mr Vega, a news article quoting an unnamed spokes person hardly constitutes "fact" plus my post was somewhat ironic as the cars been wearing B/W plates for a little while now.

I just carry some "normal" reflectives with me just in case....thanks to some sage like advice ;)

Rob - How could you post that and give no hints. Its just like watching a soap or a "too be continued" and you have to wait a week to find out who shot JR.

DVLA fact, hearsay or fiction to be confirmed by Rob Gaskin later :p I don't know why everyone is so keen to put black and silver plates on their cars anyway. Back in the early 70s when new out of the showroom I bet none of your cars had them fitted.

The newer style yellow and white plates were optionally fitted on new cars from 1968 onwards and compulsory from 1st Jan 1973.

As a small boy at that time I remember the buzz of seeing cars on the road with the colourful new style plates. The proud new car owners wanted to be seen as modern, in fashion with the kudos their latest model car and colourful plates brought. Now it seems that inverted snobbery of the period has been reversed ;)

I think its just that we like to be a bit different. I like the USA style plates but equally like the black/silver pressed plates because there are not that many on the roads.

Just spoke with the DVLA who confirmed catagorically that there are no changes to the date of black and silver plates being displayed. They confirmed that it is still 1st jan '73 and is not in any way linked to historic vehicle taxation.

I initially put the yellow/white plates on my own imported 71 car out of personal choice based on my recollections as a youngster but after a couple of years caved in to the little voice in my head saying black and silver looks more classic so suppose I've answered my own question !

So to sum up, (unless Mr Gasket or anyone else else can provide cast iron evidence) the 73 date stands.

Yes or No

I believe that the filtering of information though the DVLA is by a method known as chinese wispers so depending on who you ask, you may get a different answer. Rob has provided a document that clearly indicates a change has happened but this doesnt come directly from the DVLA so it may been lost in translation. It may be correct but does the police who enforce the law know about it. It sounds like there is at least a defence for displaying black and silver plates on a '73/74 car and thats probably good enough for me.

I would have the silver and black plates if I could. They look more classic. Don't mind he front white but the rear yellow sticks out like a sore thumb.
