Over the years I've seen some expensive plates on what I would call " budget cars" . Either these guys/girls are pretty well off or aren';t aware that you can retain a plate with the DVLA for £25 per annum.
You see a lot of valuable plates on cheap runabouts because you only pay £80 to swap from car to car. If you keep your plate on retention it's £25 per year and if you don't renew on time they can cancel your plate.
I think a lot of people do it for their own enjoyment. Obviously if you swap your car(s) regularly there's a bit of admin involved. There's plenty of plates illegally displayed out there but you could argue if they get pulled up by the police there's less chance of them drinking or drug taking ?

Retention fee was scrapped this year. It no longer costs anything.
A street away from me is '1 RAE'. My 13 week older daughter is called Ivy Rae so I thought I would make an offer. £15k didn't see it bought
That NISMO plate won't be worth much to be honest.
From my days of running 300bhp mx5's I have 'MX5 1 WON'. On retention at the moment, one day i might see if someone will give me more than the £250 I paid for it.
