I need about 5k, soul for sale

... than those asthmatic Chryslers. GM rules in the V8 world.]

I'd take the Hemi over that Chevy Lump every time. I'm not doubting it's 'anything' as they still make the big & small blocks now (and Chrysler took a huge hiatus during the oil crisis and then on for a long while). And although it's the lovechild of the entry drag racing fraternity (the SBC & BBC) the Hemi 426 is still the engine of choice (once overbored and übercharged) for the Top Fuel drag cars (fastest accelerating 'anything' on earth).

So we agree that the Ford 'pretendo muscle' of the era was shit then..?

I think you'll find that the modern Fuel engine bears only a passing semblance of any relationship with the original Hemi, being built exclusively from bespoke aftermarket parts.

The non-Hemi Chrysler engines of the '60s and '70s need a huge amount of work to make them competitive with what Chevrolet achieve with near stock parts...RatZ used to eat them for breakfast and spit out the bits.

They used to use it originally because of its size (they called it the 'elephant' as it was a really big bugger). They kept the shape and size as the blueprint for all subsequent engines (rejecting the GM & Ford efforts because of the 'rules and regulations'). They only actually built 800 units of the 1960's big 'un (I think, may need checking) and thus they are bespoke since bloody ages ago.

And the non-Hemi engines were crap, I'll agree there too.

And RATZ was/is very, very, extremely cool and loony fast and would take out pretty much anything most people have only ever seen on the TV.

Really clean underneath. Like the advert (great daily driver). It would be if you had an oilfield in the back garden! Can't imagine a 1970's 7 litre V8 being that economic. Not really a town car either. Those overhangs aren't the most practical. Still, not as humungous as the Daytona version (or it's twin, the Plymouth Superbird)

Ahh you have to admire the Superbirds, top speed to scare a 300, you can at least see exactly what they were thinking when they made the nose pointy, lost the (beautiful) flying buttress, and put some scaffolding on the back :)

Mike: Yeah that's a far superior find, if I ever win the lotto I'm gonna stay the hell away from you with all your links to nice motors :) I would never seriously consider the one I linked to, ok you can get a lot of parts new for it but that'd cost me more than buying a good one :) Plus it'd be 15 years before I drove it, and I already know what that one feels like. And we all know structure is everything!

It even has a 68 front on it. Again from past experience I'd just wait until the right 68 came up and not be hasty, nice to know though they are about and not insane money right now.

Do you think there are some no brainer easy wins for better breathing/more power on the Magnum lumps?? We've had 50 years to develop it... :D

Ok here's plan, get house, renovate like hell, await house market bounce, remortgage, buy charger, grin :D

I got over excited and started looking at porn, here it is

I'm just made a big mistake though and started looking at 67 Impalas for a low rider project, then I ended up at rods, Harley WLCs, women dressed in all the period 'pin up' kinda style and all that stuff, it's so addictive

I love the impala as a lowrider, especially when they have the rear arches covered and rolling on the hydraulics. Niiiiice!

By the way, NASA designed those 'additions' to the charger and roadrunner. It was a ploy to get Richard Petty back from Ford to Plymouth. It worked and he won a shed load more trophies for his already overly large collection.

I'm loving the last picture of the charger running on modern tyres, I bet that's fun to drive lol.

Rob Loaring at I.C.E.(who used to help with the RatZ engine builds) developed an interface plate which fits between the head and inlet manifold which straightened up the "bent" airflow which restricts the engines at the top end. I would assume that the modification would still be available and valid today. I.C.E. are now based at Silverstone.

Pioneers of Mopar drag race cars in the U.K. included Geoff Hauser (and his then wife Sylvia) - I'm sure he has developed a few tricks along the way...

That sounds good, or even just the principal that someone else did it and made it work means that if it's no longer available then it's not a barmy idea and it could be replicated again today :) Wonder what the clearance between the pancake and hood is like?

Think you'll ever get yourself another old American for sunny days Mike?

If I was ever tempted to return it would probably be a '34 Hot Rod or similar (but with GM engine, not F**d). Think ZZ Top or Boyd Coddington...

Thanks for that reminder Colin! I wonder where it is now, twenty more years on...
That guy did a great job finding the rare bits and made what was a very sound car into an absolute stunner. He had a '64 GTO as well if I remember rightly...

ya missed this right hand drive 240

You mean 260 of course...

I have seen this before - it has been on their list for a long time now. Whilst interesting, it doesn't look particularly clean and was/is quite expensive. Also not really relevant to this thread about Americana.

BTW quick question -> Can you realistically run a car with a big blower with OPEN tbs sticking out the hood like that and not expect to break something or have to rebuild/bore it every ten thousand miles if you're lucky? I know mad max got away with it and he was driving across the desert ;)
