Half shaft bolts

Has anyone got any tips on getting the bolts out of the half shafts at the wheel end. I'm scared of rounding the nuts off with an open ended spanner and cannot get a ring spanner on them.

TIA

Hey Jim, you've put penetrant oil on those nut / bolt combos?

They've got the split spring / spring washer on those, so it will feel tight, but it will come loose no problem, just need confidence.

What I found helps is to be able to turn the half shafts freely to position the 2x spanners.

I used a flange spanner on the bolt end with a normal open spanner on the other end - you'll find that the half shafts flanges on the wheel end tend to get in the way of turning the spanner, hence why you need to be able to move the diff freely. Hope that helps bud 👍

As mentioned Grind down a 14mm box end so it fits over the nut. The hex on the bolt will keep it from turning. Heat the nut with a propane torch. A good wack with a hammer on the wrench will start it. Work one at a time in the 12 o’clock position . Has never failed me even on rusty ones.
