Going to see a 260z soon... what good and bad things should I be looking for?

Apparently it "starts and runs", doesn't sound too convincing <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

My lawnmower "starts and runs" but I wouldn't take it to Billing! <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

I've had a look through the FAQ thanks, its a bit vague... I was really wanting a few personal stories "When I bought my first Z, I totally forgot to check out the XYZ, it later cost me £xxxx, so make sure you check that out!" etc...

I do expect to have to do some work on the car... I just don't want it to consume my whole life <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Structure structure structure.

Listen to it when driving.

Take a magnet, work out what it will and wont stick to.

Tap panels to see if they are made of filler <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

Take your time, don't be embarassed.

(can you tell I'm new to all this?)

Print out a copy of the Buying a zed article and take it with you. Check everything on the car from head to foot, front to back ,inside .outside. Do not miss anything right down to the badges. It all cost money. No badges to check? &nbsp;Deduct £150 from price. No bumpers? Deduct £600.Cracked/chipped windscreen? Deduct £250 and so on. It would take me an hour at least and Im supposed to know wot Im doing. So you will need longer. Take your dad,a mechanic, or an experienced Z Man with you. or preferably all three. Dont chatter just look and write it all down as you check .Believe nothing unless backed up by an invoice. Trust no one.
There was a 260 for sale at Billing. Asking price was £1500. Was worth about £400/500 in real world so Im told.
Be afraid, very afraid of the unknown.

Thanks thats good advice.

I'll be taking my Dad (and possibly uncle as well, both experienced mechanics/restorers) My Dad and I fixed up an old Morris 1000 one summer <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> Fun times.

Check list is a good idea.

Anyone got an outline drawing of a 260z, so I can print it out like before you rent a car and they go round marking any scratches etc... on the diagram? <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Hi,
&nbsp;I know that there's a checklist you can print off when buying a 300ZX, on one of the US sites....I know because I used it myself when shopping for cars. There may be a similar one available for 260Zs?
You could try the Internet Z Car Club

Best quick advice I can give is to go and have a look, it may be really bad and not be worth bothering anybody else. If you like what you see don't make a decision but take a club member with you who has restored one. Unless your relations are Zed enthusiasts they may not understand the time, availability of parts and cost factors. Listen to the expert and if he says walk away do so! If they say buy it make sure you still have money left to spend on it afterwards, you will need it no matter how good it seems!

Don't think so <img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> Why?

Just thought it was maybe the the car you were going to look at,the advert also said "starts and runs". I went to have a look at it myself but it was probably too much work for me , would've been interested to see someone elses opinion of it.

Ahh right... found the one you mean. Looks like it needs a lot of work!

Did you look at it? Its cheap!

Yes I did look at it, to be honest I'm no expert in Z's or restoration so I wouldn't like to give a very detailed opinion on it. However to me it looked fairly solid, it had extensive welding and needed some more , the interior and lights had been removed not sure how complete these were, the engine did run and sounded O.K.
