Curious that people install these box's without finding out any of the details of whats "in the tin" so to speak

This is a good UK resource for the "c" option box, in particular the FS5W71C

PhatTransmissions FS5W71C information - Main.HomePage

Spoke to the guy who used to do the work "Phat Bob" some time ago, he no longer rebuilds box's as its has become somewhat commoditised, but he pointed me in the right directions.

There is mention of the OS Giken gear kit on Phat Bobs page , I believe this was in 3 and 5 gear options, OS Giken page is here
OS Close Ratio Gear Kits | Products | OS GIKEN

Also these guys do them
Par-Engineering - Gearsets (Nissan)
NISMO | Silvia•180SX Reinforced Cross 6-Speed Transmission

And theres a bit of a clue here ;)

Steve I fitted one on your recommendation so trusted you ;)

Secondly I counted the teeth to establish what MY two boxes were. That way I can avoid inaccurate info from articles/reference material.

Hey Steve if I sent you a photo of the internals of the current box (for 2 years) in my car you might not even recognise it .

Ive got the 5 speed I pulled from my 240Z but unfortunately it hasnt been used since 1983. I know the original 4 speed was pulled at some point in the late 70's and this box was put in to replace it and the car has only done 34,000 miles I think since 1971 so the box may not have done much (at least not in this car).

The clutch operated fine when it was on the car and I would assume the gearbox is fine...if you fancy giving it a try just make me an offer on it? Otherwise I will be banging it on eBay along with the engine at some point.

- I don't want to go to the trouble and expense of swapping boxes only to find the new one is no better than the one I have taken out.

Cheers Pete, I did read that but then there was a lot of talk on the thread about buying a used s14 box.

The only reason I was offering it is because I want peanuts for it and im sure he could have it checked out before he stuck it in.

Well I bought a second hand 260Z gearbox from a classic car company that were advertising it on the net. It was £250 and, although untested, had receipts which indicated that reconditioning work had been done on it.

Got it fitted by my mechanic Mark . . . and found it was WORSE than my original box! Crunching into second, third and even fifth.

But my despair has now turned to joy.

I decided to go to an excellent place called Top Gear in Liverpool, a family-owned business of very helpful and friendly gearbox experts.

They have stripped down my original box, which I took with me, and then dropped the internet-bought box out of the car and stripped that down too, with the aim of making up one good box.

They were able to get a few bits out of the box I had bought, but mainly worked on my original one.

They swapped some of the synchros around and also, I believe, reversed one. They then renewed the bearings and throughly cleaned and set up the box before putting it back in the car.

I watched three guys work on it for around four hours. Total cost was £250 plus VAT and I now have a box that is working great - even on a freezing cold morning like today.

Anyway, I don't know how long it will last - hopefully a long while. But in the meantime it gives me time to save some more cash when I may, in the future, go for the S14 option as provided by the very helpful Pmac if my current box starts playing up.

Thanks for all the advice folks - nice to have a happy ending for once.

By the way - I've also finally fixed that ruddy water leak into the front footwells!

Currently working on my own ingenious solution to the failed heated rear window issue (a problem I imagine just about ALL 240/260Z owners have). If my idea works, I'll put up a post to let you know!
