Faking a radio

I'm thinking of throwing out a radio in the 240 (after market, horrid thing), and having nothing there other than blanking plate.

Then I thought, perhaps I can make a copy of OEM - just mock one up - only the front...

Has this been done before and any ideas?

I'm not paying £500 or more for a radio that I'm not going to use anyway... Make sense ?

Cheers, Gary (cheapskate).

Sounds like a good option. I'd consider doing the same thing as I have some modern system in my Z, but I never use it as I'd rather listen too the car :D

Agreed. I think I can mock up a sheet of ABS to look just like the surround - then get an old radio and use the buttons/knobs. A nice little side line business for me then!

I removed my awful radio and fitted a plastic storage box designed to fit in it's place. At least it's useful for holding my mobile, wallet etc

I have since bought a 'period' Datsun radio (Clarion) in case I decide to re-install one (unlikely).

thanks Matt - I would very much appreciate that. As I said, its for visual appearance more than anything else. If you pm me we can sort it out. Thanks Gary

I had a 'hole' where the radio once was when I bought mine. Filled the hole with a broken original for a few quids.

When? Try sourcing one these days for under £200.

My thoughts are if you are going to go through the effort of fabricating a front that looks pretty stock, you may as well go a little extra mile and put something that works behind the knobs too! Even if it is just an amplifier taking an input from your MP3 player.

It was a few years I suppose, but it wasn't an advertised one that I picked, I just asked about and another member had one in his a shed at the bottom of a box or the like that he let me have for a token tenner or there abouts.

I'm envious

These were throw away items that now have become a speciality.

Just be warned mate. As some here will testify, I am known for being particularly poor at getting around to these things so you have to keep pestering me.

The radio in the orange car works ok. Not sure if its original but it looks pretty old and appears factory. It is an 8track so not sure they were around at that. Trying to find some cartridges at the moment to test it.

Knowing Johny's tastes, do you think OneDirection will be on 8 track?
