Coolant Sensors

Hi, I need a steer on replacing the coolant sensor on my L28 swapped 240z. The car boiled up on a rally and the gauge gave me no warning. I know the gauge might well be at fault but before I go the whole hog and fit an ancillary gauge I thought I would try a new sensor. I can buy a new L24 sensor but unsure it will fit? Anyone have any experience? I am assuming I have a stock L28 thermostat housing.

Thanks

I'd be surprised if its a different sensor on the L24 and L28. Maybe check somewhere like Rockauto and see if the same part comes up for it when you filter by 240z vs 280z?

Also how many sensor openings does the stat housing have? As the 280z should have 4 plus an output on the back side, but obviously you won't be using the EGR and EFI stuff so if there's 4 holes 2 should be plugged I think? But I'm pretty sure that should leave the water temp sensor as one of the 2 that remains on both models.

Where does your gauge needle sit normally? I've always found mine to be pretty responsive, so I wonder whether you might have a head gasket problem.

It rises to juts below half and then stays put, event when the engine is clearly getting ready to boil over! Unhelpful. As to head gasket, oil is OK, no steam from the exhaust and little coolant loss, so hoping not. The oil pressure gauge has already given up and there is a smiths replacement in there so there maybe something up with whatever controls the instrument pack I guess.

Top tip. Rockauto suggests the same sensor for all S30
